I would like to hear from someone who has succesfully shut the infamous EGR valve using Vag-com, just to describe the procedure in detail (on non-PD 1.9tdi).

I only want to do it because apparently it stops gunk clogging up the inlet manifold, but are there any drawbacks? If not what does that valve do in the first place?

For a really good explanation have a look at the Ford Scorpio web site. There have been loads of problems with EGR systems and many owners have disconnected them completely with no major problems. In brief the EGR is used when combustion temperatures go above a preset limit. Exhaust gas is fed back into the inlet manifold which replaces some of the air, this in turn makes the mixture go rich so the fueling is reduced by the engine management system. The net result is the same as if you had reduced throttle. The horror stories of melted pistons don't seem to have happened and indeed my 24v Cosworth with it's EGR defeated was quite happy in Germany at 140mph+ for some 2.5 hours. The problems we sufferred with EGR enabled were slight hesitation at constant speeds.

Closing the EGR down (not fully) is a standard means of preventing hideous problems of inlet tract gumming on TDis.

There are various threads on the forum, including links and more detail.

I did it, and gained a little power, and a more responsive engine. Whether there will be long term benefits is open to experience.

There are no drawbacks, apart from a slight rise in NOX emissions.

Thank you all guys for your input - however relevant...

Unfortunately for me the kind soul with a vag-com thingy could not do a thing on my motor! The manual from Ross-tech said it would not work with 1995-2000 Sharans due to some bugs in manufacturers' software, so this probably explains it not working with my 1997 Alhambra 1.9 90bhp AHU tdi. I felt relief that I hadn't splashed out on OBD II cable + software etc, but still very disappointed with inability to do anything - so the inlet manifold will just keep gumming up...

I wander if any of you folks have had any success with early models tdi Shalaxys regarding vag-com ?

Like the picture of your Alhambra. Must say I've failed to be impressed in the past by the Alhambra's front end but the angle you've caught it at does it some justice!

Looks good!
