PBallard Posted December 28, 2011 Report Posted December 28, 2011 My 05 1.9 tdi galaxy engine died on me after only 75k miles with a shattered exhaust valve. I bought a recon engine to replace it but it is obviously a different variant since the water pump off the original wouldn't fit. I found a water pump that fits and it is designed for "BTB" engine numbers while I think the original is an "AUY" variant. The only other difference found so far is the sump where the exchange has a hole for some kind of sensor, while the original does not. I'm getting nervous now that either, other bits and pieces off the original block won't fit or, even if it does all go together, the computer will be tuned differently leading either to the motor not running properly or long term damage. Anyone know about these engine variants and whether changing one for the other in this way is likely to cause problems? Quote

AUY is the standard 115bhp fit. 04/2000 - 11/2005 BTB is listed as 150bhp variant fitted between 01/2005 - 05/2007. It'll need a matching ECU and possibly the wiring looms may be different. Turbos, injectors etc all different. Edited December 29, 2011 by seatkid Quote

Unfortunately the engine no is no longer visible on the block, and the one listed on the reg document is some Ford number bearing no resemblance to the standard 3 letter prefix to the vw engine numbers. Any idea on how to convert from ford to vw engine numbers? Quote
