fullofthepipe Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 hi all. im after buying a 99 lx 1.9tdi with a blown manual gearbox and would love to know is it possible or practical to fit any other model gearbox? the car is fitted with the ahu engine. after a bit of research i found that all the manual mk1 petrol and diesels have the vtx75 ford box. the reason i want to know this is the breakers over here are charging an arm and a leg for the tdi box and i can get a low mileage 97 2.3 box for less than half the price. sparky Paul Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 I'm not sure if the 2.3 gearbox can be physically fitted to the diesel, AFAIK the gearboxes are basically the same with the addition of an adapter plate on the diesel... however, the ratios on 4th and 5th are different on the diesel. fullofthepipe Posted November 18, 2011 Author Report Posted November 18, 2011 cheers for the info. guess that options out. start searching again. Quote
STYLIN Posted December 1, 2011 Report Posted December 1, 2011 I wouldn't put a petrol g/box in a diesel(without checking the final drive ratios anyway),i tried it in my passat(auto)and the final drive ratios were all wrong an it was pulling 3500rpm at about 65mph... Quote
