Is your car manual or auto, I lost all gears except 3rd and 4th, just over a year ago, my car has 105,000 miles on it.

I discovered that although linkages on both ends of cable were attached, and gearshift was a tad floppy, the selector at the gearbox end had one of cables had popped off its balljoint. I cured this by popping back on, and to stop it popping off again I used plastic cable ties (the non undo kind) to maintain its attachment.

It still is working today, had only cost 50pence, and I am confident the cable tie will last longer than the original Ford plastic part.

I hope this offers some answer.

Check your drive shafts and half shaft

Common fault is the halfshaft splines go, you can locate the shaft on the drivers side coming from the gearbox joining the o/s drive shaft. To check one end turns the other stays still.

The firm below do a replacement part at half the Ford price, the firm is in Poland but don't let that put you off, mine came in 3days, service excellent, machining quality first class, if you ring them they do speak English.

I would think the driveshaft spline issue would be accompanied by some nasty noises.

If you cannot feel the normal gearchange resistance or gates, my guess would be either a cable is broken or detached, or a problem with the gear selector mechanism on the gearbox. There is a bolt in the selector mechanism which shears or falls out into the gearbox, it's not an uncommon fault. This thread might help...

I don't think that this is the splines issue as a) it wouldn't affect the gearchange at all and b} the splines problem is only encountered on the MK2. It is either the gear selector cable or possibly the selector bolt has fallen out which is quite common on the Mk1 - do a search.

Hiya thanks for all your fast replies, its a manual gearbox and like i previously stated the cables all seem to be connected both ends, ive moved the selecter on the gearbox (which moves the gearstick also) and there doesn't seem to be anything happening beyond it :) (hope thats clear and understandable)

Its probably the selector shaft bolt as bigjeeze and sparky says - have a look at his link and do a search of the forums for lots of info.

  :) :) :)

found the problem the selector bolt hadn't sheared off it worked itself loose and fell out, managed to get the stray bolt out with a magnet on some wire, just need to get a new bolt and possibly selector shaft hopefully once its back together all will be ok :)

thanks again for all the advice given
