I have a 1999 Alhambra that only has a lap belt on the middle seat in the middle row. Up to now I've used isofix seats for all 3 kids, but as they've grown up have moved on to booster seats. I'm now at the stage where the smallest is still in the isofix seat fitted to the middle seat, but he'll be out of it pretty soon. The only viable option would seem to be to put a seat in the third row and use the 3 point belt on a booster seat - but how safe will this be in a rear end crash? Any other options other than using the lap belt?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Thanks

Richard

He'll be a lot safer in the third row with a 3-point belt rather than in the middle seat with just a lap strap. My Gal only has lap strap for centre seat but with only 2 kids, it is not so much of a worry for me, especially as they are now so tall that they don't need boosters any more! At 11 and 13, they are almost as tall as my wife, and taller than my mum!

My Gal only has lap strap for centre seat

When did they introduce the roof-mounted 3-pointer in the middle row Ivor?

Mine has one (regd Sept 03 but manufactured Jan 03)

Well, mine was built in October 2000 but not first registered until the end of January 2001. When I was looking at it, there was another Gal of similar age and mileage - registered in March 2001 - that did have the 3-point belt for the middle seat, and it was also the revised spec with steel spare wheel (whereas mine has an alloy) and the "transparent" design of headrest whereas mine are "solid". ISTR that the centre belt could be specified as a 3-point one as an option for a while, so I don't know when it became standard.

I think it started after the facelift. I wish I had known as I went for the 6 seater as I viewed the middle seat with lap belt as useless.

I am also not sure if you have the rear air conditioning in the roof itaffects its fitting.

You can get rear c\c with 3 point centre harness, it's fitted on my 2003 115 TDi Ghia Auto

The facelift was actually a two-stage project. Most work, such as a reinforced body and new hood+lights, was done in stage 1. A few things, such as larger front brakes (requiring 16" wheels) and three-point belts in all 7 places, were added subsequently, some nine months or so later. Reputedly, this was because the facelift project was running late due to internal mistakes at Volkswagen.

I think the look-thru headrests coincide with stage two. I view the cars from stage one as being the result of a project planning error.

Ergo, there are three sub-generations of the first Shalaxy generation.

Just to add to previous post, rear centre lap belt was changed on all galaxy's after Feb 2001.

Of course models built before this but registered after this date would have a lap belt rather than a 3 point type.

I don't know if it is the same for the other versions perhaps others could post.

Looked at plenty of 2001 y reg Galaxy's before buying and was surpised to find lot's had only a lap belt.

Richard if you do a search there was a thread a few months ago regarding an accessory 3-point seat belt. It required a reel to be permanently bolted through the floor behind the middle seat, which may or may not be a problem to you.

i have just read the title to this thread

'Safety In Rear Row Of Seats'

'Safety'

My younger son says 'safety' when he farts, so, little chuckle for me, lol
