thought it was battery as when you turn key nothing but jump start from another car and fires straight up.

question is anyone know is ford galaxy 05 plate 1.9 diesel zetec alternator exact same one a vw sharran of same year uses ???

hope someone can help as got a friend that works for vw so could get cheaper if part is the same

if amperage is the same then i would say yes! but remember the clutch pulleys can fail and give symptoms of duff alternator when its just the clutch pulley

ditto what howey said, but before you part with any hard earned cash, has anyone done a test on the alternator, if so what was the readings as there are other common problems which stop the alternator recharging the battery (ie melted fuse box by battery, loose wiring connections ect).

Also can you expand on turning the key nothing but when jump started fires straight away, that in itself sounds like battery/alternator problems but can I ask where the jump leads are connected as it can eliminate certain things and more importantly get the alternator output checked and the associated wiring with a multimeter

Take what Halfords say with a pinch of salt !

1. To check the alternator, stick a multimeter on the battery and measure the voltage with the engine running. Should be approximately 14.1 - 14.4 volts. Turn on a few electrical items, e.g. headlights and rear heated window. The voltage should remain the same, although you may need to up the engine revs a tad.

2. If the running voltage is low (< 13.4) (esp under load), go back to the main fuse box in the engine bay and measure the voltage at the main lead from the alternator. Check the fuse box for signs of overheating/melting. Common problem caused by faulty crimp on main power cable.

3. If it starts with a jump start, battery was flat and/or duff. Recharge the battery overnight. Then let it stand a few hours, if it wont start then the battery is the likely suspect.

The 1.9 tdi is a VW engine and has VW ancillieries.
