Davehillbo Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 As some of you already know I had my cambelt changed earlier this year, and car has been sluggish since with small ammounts of white smoke from exhaust. People have said timing probably is off, is there a way to put this right without going garage? Have vcds and cable. Or if anyone lives near colne can help me out :) Quote
TeamGreen Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Hi Dave, VCDS can be used to check / adjust the timing but only if it is a fully registered version and also only on non PD TDI's. The PD engines timing is adjusted electronically and can't be altered. http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/tdi.html I managed it on my old 98 Sharan with an AFN engine using VAGCOM (previous version of VCDS) and the Haynes manual. You don't need any special tools just a decent set of tools, time and a few plasters for when you skin your knuckles! If you do decide to do it then spend a while working through which bolts to undo to make sure you can get to them and your sockets will fit the restricted access, however, if the timing is out and you correct it then sense of satisfaction is well worth it! seatkid Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 I think Daves a mk 1 Tdi. I think you need to start by physically checking the belt is correctly fitted. Could be the distibutor pump is one notch out or the camshaft is one notch out. I think there are pictures/diagrams on the forum, try a search. Quote
