hi im a new member, just got a 2.3 petrol galaxy, T,reg been ok till yesterday. when up to normal engine temprature was slowing down through the gears the car nearly stalled then revs picked up again twice in 2 or 3mins then was ok, but tonight whilst i was out the engine nearly stopped compleatly then just picked up again. seems to happen only when its up to its running temp. also anyone had to change a leaking power steering pressure switch on the rack, ie (how do you remove it and replace please) thanks....

Welcome to the Forum.

OK the stalling problem I am pretty sure is the Idle control valve.

eBay link for reference

when the engine is cold it opens up extra fuel (Cold start valve) to get the car up to temperature (A bit like the old days with a choke)

when its up to temperature the tick over is regulated by a electronic valve/servo called a Idle Control Valve. Its main purpose is to keep the tick over at around 750 RPM it does this by moving a valve backwards and forwards for extra air or less air.

What happens over time is this gets gummed up and sticks, The standard fix is to remove it (two bolts) and clean out with Carburettor cleaner also clean up inside the throttle housing

Throttle body Cleaning

Never changed a power steering switch but the majority I have seen are just screw in with a O ring might just be a case of new O ring

OK ?

ok will try the idle control valve tip, and see if that works. mind you my galaxy ticks over at around 800+ rpm and seems a bit in my mind.

Yes it will tick-over OK

It's ONLY purpose is to control the tick-over and adjust it due to various factors i.e. temperature the problem is if the valve or throttle is gummed up with oil there is a delay while the valve tries to get to a STEADY idle and as you approach roundabouts or come off the throttle the valve is trying really hard to hold tick-over steady and on occasions this isn't happening fast enough and the car stalls.

On a manual gearbox this can be corrected by dipping the clutch and blipping the throttle to stop the stall (I think we have all done this at on time or another)

BUT on a auto box the valve needs to work perfectly with no hesitation as blipping the throttle will power you on !!

As you can see it is quite a common fault especially on high mileage cars and I think it is a standard fix to clean the throttle and valve at garage service intervals.

OK ?

Idle speed for the 2.3 should be 875rpm.

Your symptoms sound typical of sticking Idle Control Valve, as said above.
