Hi folks, new here and first but probably not the last question. Anyway..I bought a 1998 MKI 2.3 petrol automatic cheap and was going to do some minor fixings. First was the crappy radio cd player. It lost its memory every time it was switched off and there was a cd jammed in it. When I tried to remove the unit it turned out it was only jammed in there because it wrapped in gaffer tape...There are 2 plugs (one black and one brown) connected to another single plug that went to the radio/cd player.A mod? So, I looked for another radio/cd player and found a mint original 6000cds on fleabay for

Mk1 cars have a single din radios with a CD changer controller that could sit in the second single din slot. Removing the second shelf would also require you to remove the bar between the two but then you would have a double din + gap size hole so not really an option. The Mk2 Galaxys have a 1.5 Din hole and therefore can take the 6000 (which is a 1.5 Din radio, not a double din size as some sellers claim).

The early single din units that Ford produced were all quite crap tbh, so given the above and that there are loads of good aftermarket single din radios out there I would probably be heading off in that direction.rather then trying to stay original. You can even get remote converters for most of the mainstream brands should you have the remote stalk fitted.

Cheers Mirez. That seems to gel with what I thought when looking at the stereo and in the handbook/haynes. It looks to me like nothing new was ever fitted. The ebay seller was sure this 6000 would fit. So,it doesn't and I can tell him and send it back and buy a decent one - a single din cd/radio? And the 2 plugs (one brown and one black) are the originals? There isn't a steering wheel control or cd changer in the back...just bog standard. Cheers again John
