thepottages Posted September 5, 2011 Report Posted September 5, 2011 Hello im new to here and to the ford galaxy we bought our 1st galaxy 3 weeks ago just an old 52 plate tdi automatic.on the second day it felt like it was struggling to change gears then the next morning it wouldnt change into second gear until it had warmed up then the car was fine. I was told it could be the filter in the gearbox so we had that done and the gearbox oil changed but it was still the same for 2 days then fantastic it ran like a dreamfor 2 days and its started again but its doing it now even when its warmed up.our last car was wrote off when a stupid woman pulled out accross the front of us so we needed a 7 seater that would tow our six berth caravan and i must admit we have towed the van with it and its fantastic at towing its just the gear problem do i cut my loses and get rid now to be honest we dont have the money to put into the car if its gunna be expensive Quote

Self diagnosis is made easier with vagcom software and a lead to your laptop plugged intocar .From there you can get an idea if the problems electronic. For now i would check the atf level with gear box at 40 deg and check brand and type of atf used On the earlier mk1 autobox you can reset it to factory settings which sometimes helps when your driving habitsare different to prev owner you could do this manually however i've only done it on vagcom to do manualy try this borrowed from t4 web: -Turn on ignition without starting engine.Turn off ignition.Turn on ignition again without starting engine and depress the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there for at least ten seconds.Release the accelerator pedal and turn the key to start the engine in the regular manner.Drive away going through all four gears. Amarok Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 (edited) Welcome,I am going through the same heartache you are experiencing and my Galaxy is much older !.My problem was I have no 4th Gear and 3rd was 'Hard Shifting' I took it to the Garage and they changed the oil and filter and said OK its fixed :D when I collected it it was changing better but still no 4th gear so fuel consumption is through the roof as it revs the rocks off at 60MPH after 24 Hours it was back to hard shifting AGAIN and now with a leak from the autotrans sump !!!!!!!The car is going back to the Garage tomorrow to see if they can fix it, but after speaking to a Local Transmission Rebuilding company I don't hold out much hope as in his own words wereThe Autoboxes on the Galaxy are a 'NIGHTMARE' as they are all electronic and the slightest spots of dirt will screw it up. To reconditon and refit was in the region of £2,000 !, the recon box alone is £1,600, but because the dirty oil has moved through the entire system you need a torque converter as well :o After I picked myself up off the floor... Further searching on the net this is a MAJOR problem with these Autoboxes, as when the oil is contaminated Reading between the lines on your post This is going to cost you I'm afraid I would consider getting shot of the Auto Galaxy and get yourself a manual Edited September 6, 2011 by Amarok Quote
