ridway Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Read the threads and somewhat confused. I've got the 2.3 DOHC gal and would like to use a modern laptop to read codes and do all the other things you can with the proper interface (USB and PCMCIA, no RS232 though) My questions for the knowledgable is where and what kind of interface cable do I need and what and where can I buy, download trial, beg, steal or borrow the software? Costs? What depth of information can be retreived from the system? Cheers Rich Quote
Guest lesmon Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 Did a quick search on E-Bay anf found this: Ford Diagnostic cable & software It is now gone, but I was wondering if anybody on this forum use similar kit for getting diagnostic codes and information from the GAL. I've heard that Ford charges about Quote
Marky Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 VAG.COM is a free utility based on the Audi/VW tool..it is free to downloadthe s/ware from here... www.ross-tech.com All the info you will need is on here along with the different versions for different vehicles. All the cable info is on there as well, once you have sorted the cable you needdo a search on ebay, there are plenty on there in the region of 70 quid though  HTHMark Quote
_dg Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 http://www.skpang.co.uk/ for the interface and lead. There is a good previous thread on this subject, and someone explains the process very well and suppliers and software are mentioned. Quote

Guest lesmon Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 Well, that link confused me a whole lot more. It seems that different versions of the Gals may use different diagnostics stds. Also depends on how old the vehicle is. Maybe the differences lie in who produced the engines i.e. J1850PWM for the Ford engines and ISO9141 for the VW engines. Also everything from 2000 onwards is ISO9141. I was thinking of getting this item from e-bay (and I was sure it would work) until now. ODB2 VAG-COM connector cable on ebay Does anyone know which vehicle uses which protocol? and what would a 1997 V6 Gal use? Quote
Guest lesmon Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 Bought the kit on Ebay. Downloaded Vag-Com, SCantool and Vehicle Explorer.Tried Vag-Com last night and it worked first time. :D Was able to read a few codes (i.e. rear air-con flap motor short or failed) which I knew because I only get rear air-con on the lower vents - not the over-head ones. Got code 01135 - interior monitoring sensor - maybe still there from my flooded alarm unit - but did not clear that as yet.Still need to play around with a few more things, and try some of the other tools (Scantool & VE). Anybody got a licenced copy of VAG-COM that they want me to keep as a backup? and for infrequent testing of the media?. Just thought I would let the forum know that some of the cheaper diagnostic stuff does work (at least on a 97 V6 Gal). Quote

Guest spanner137 Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 vag.com doesnt do engine codes on ford petrol engines Quote
MrT Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 vag.com doesnt do engine codes on ford petrol engines It does on more recent engines (2001) when Ford changed from using the PWM to the ISO protocol. It certainly works on my petrol engine, although that is VW based. Quote
