Denis Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 OK I know this has been discussed before and the concensus was that economy and performance weren't affected one iota but I saw this on the Daily Telegraph website, obviously some cars do prefer super.. What kind of fuel am I? I have a 1995 Volvo 850 T5 estate with automatic transmission. It has covered 92,000 miles and has a full Volvo service history. I am very disappointed with its economy. I have written to Volvo but it does not have much information available. Apparently I should get 27mpg at a steady 70mph but I cannot better 24, no matter how carefully I drive.R.K., Evesham Are you using 98Ron petrol, as the handbook advises? In Britain, this means Shell Optimax. Lower-octane petrol saps about 20bhp and increases fuel consumption. Quote
MrT Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 A concern that I have shared. I have tried using the more expensive petrol and I was unable to notice any difference in consumption or performance. Quote
Richmond Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 A concern that I have shared. I have tried using the more expensive petrol and I was unable to notice any difference in consumption or performance. Same here. A very unscientific test suggests that fuel consumption increased with the higher octane petrol without an increase in performance (not that an increase in performance is really needed). Quote
Dally Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 What do you think guys - Shall I try the 98 RON in my V6? At worst, it'll lighten my wallet abit!! Quote
Denis Posted May 25, 2004 Author Report Posted May 25, 2004 At Shell you get a scratchcard whenever you fill up with Optimax- you scratch the card and inhale the smelling salts, just in case you feel faint when you see how much that tankful cost. Quote
Guest kev140766 Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 I have tried a few tankfuls of optimax in my 2.0 petrol. The cost is naughty to say the least ( I'm sure it cannot cost that much extra to produce) A tankful now and again is cheaper than 'normal' fuel and a bottle of that valve cleaning stuff. I reckon I got an extra 20 mile out of a tank full, but I may of been sub conciously taking it easy as it was so expensive. I also changed my oil to 5w 30 Magnatec. My fuel consuption is it it's worst when engine is cold so the better oil might help. Petrol Galaxy's cause their owners to get confused between the fuel guage and rev counter as the needles move at the same speed! Quote
