mememe Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 Hi all, I have a bit of a dilemma. I have acquired a really good condition 2001 2.8 v6 Galaxy Ghia Automatic from a family friend, however it will not go into reverse. I can move the lever to the R position and I can feel it go in to gear but it just wont move backwards. It appears to move forwards ok, but with the lack of tax and MOT I cant really put it through its paces. I believe a band has probably snapped inside the box. My possible options1. Pay Quote
GT4THUG Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 the way i would look at it is you got the galaxy for very little, and its worth upto the retail value. so any repairs up to this would be budget depending worth while, as finding another with this background would be hard to do. what 'off the shelf' places are there in the area with a box already to go ( on exhange) to get yours going ? has the Galaxy been to another ( your usual) garage just incase the diagnosing garage had a could be bothered , or the owner can afford, attidude to repairing it.. you never know a toyoya dealer did that to me, i bought my GT4 which had been regularly serviced by this garage to get a hike in costs when i bought it as they didnt know i was a friend of the previous owner (!) it might be a simple fix just diagnosed as 'cant be bothered to investigate- they have a inherent fault for this, fit another and fingers crossed...' hopefully other input will be added now to the condition of the transmission, as for main faults and rebuild costs.. then decide.. sparky Paul Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 (edited) A replacement auto box is always going to be hard to find due to the failure rate, and when they do appear, they fetch good money. If you would prefer to fix the car, one option would be to look for a damaged or MOT failure car on auction sites. I saw a vandalised mkII automatic with reasonable mileage go for around £500 not long ago, there was no mention of the box being faulty, athough this would of course have to be confirmed. Once you have liberated the parts you need, the shell plus any scrap parts would weigh in for £300, maybe a bit more if you weigh any alloys and/or cat/s in separately. mememe Posted August 11, 2011 Author Report Posted August 11, 2011 Thanks for the responses so far. I have just been offered a second hand box. How do I know if it will fit. are there any numbers on the gearboxes or marks that tell me what model they are. Quote
