Scarbs Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 Hello, new to this forum and wishing to purchase a used MK2 Galaxy. The bay of eee item number 130549632553 is what I'm keen on. I would like a Ghia with as many toys as possible. It must be a manual diesel. The vehicle mentioned earlier seems like a suitable candidate. There is a problem with it though. Obviously the best thing would be to see it in order to diagnose the problem fully but if you are able to advise me what it may be I will be able to make a more informed decision to go and view the Galaxy. Thank you for your help in advance.Scarbs Quote
SilverBeast Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 You said it 'must be a manual', but that one is an automatic! If you have a laptop it would benefit you to get a lead (I got one of these ebay link) so you can use VAG-COM free version. If you are buying a diesel Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra then it will be well worth it anyway. Best bet is to scour this Forum and get an idea for potential issues. I did (I bought mine from ebay last year), and most of my problems have been predicted from here - coulbn't predict the radiator would start leaking though  From my point of view make sure the air conditioning is working, I'm not sure mine was when I got it, now it definitely isn't  as this is a very common and has several different issues. Scarbs Posted August 4, 2011 Author Report Posted August 4, 2011 Well spotted SilverBeast. Yes it is an automatic and I suppose there will be compromises somewhere. We have an auto currently and would prefer manual but it's one thing that could be compromised... I think! Scarbs You said it 'must be a manual', but that one is an automatic! seatkid Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 The fault as described doesnt sound like any standard fault so you should be prepared to accept it is a serious issue. I dont think sensor or timing issues are to blame here. Rough running when cold that clears when its warm sounds suspiciously as if its an injector related problem. At best it could be a failing/dodgy injector wiring loom - quite common but not usually temperature sensitive. At worst - and I'm inclined to think this, its worn camshaft lobes due to not using correct spec PD oil or neglecting oil changes. THe discount offered is a pittance. If you insist on buying it, get an engineers report and ask to examine the camshaft for injector lobe wear - which in itself will cost you quite a bit. Quote
Scarbs Posted August 7, 2011 Author Report Posted August 7, 2011 A much appreciated reply, thank you Seatkid. I think I'll avoid it.Scarbs The fault as described doesnt sound like any standard fault so you should be prepared to accept it is a serious issue.
