Starter Motor Engaging When Driving / Dodgy Ignition Barrel?

the mrs just got in and said that the ignition barrel on our 02 Mk2 1.9tdi was a bit too 'sensitive', and it was also making a noise when running.

 

I went out and started the car and it seemed ok - however when turning the key a little bit clockwise when running, the starter engaged and span with a loud noise.

 

obviously not normal - but is it an ignition barrel thats the problem or the starter solenoid? car starts and runs fine.

ignition switch faulty, usually vauxhalls that do this and then destroy their starter motors!!!!

 

needs new switch before it costs loadsa money !!!!

Thanks, i was thinking thats what it is, how do i go about changing the barrell?

 

can i just change the barrel and keep the key/transponder?

just to add it was the switch on the back of the barrel. accessible by removing the upper, then lower ignition cowling.
