Hi people, just a quick one for you to answer,My mot is coming up and i have a Tyre on rear that still has good tread in the center of Tyre and the inside of Tyre is ok but outside part of tread on Tyre is worn will this pass a mot?
Posted

As marcostig says above above, there must be a minimum of 1.6mm across the central 75% of the tyre.

Contrary to popular belief, there does not need to be a visible tread pattern on the rest of the tyre, but no plys must be exposed.

the remaining tread pattern ( outside the centre 3/4 band that must have 1.6mm minimum tread depth) has to show the original, unbroken tread pattern.

the 2 tyres i put on about 18 months ago have only done less than 10,000 miles and they have worn on the shoulders too!! i know the alignment is spot on as i do it myself several times a year as part of my job, so i assume its a galaxy trait ????

Not really, I would question tyre quality and suitability... are they reinforced? That is a classic characteristic of a non reinforced tyre on a car which requires them, the shoulders aren't able to handle the load and subsequently wear much quicker.

The visible tread rule only applies to any vehicle with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or gross train weight (GTW) over 3500kgs or a motorcycle above 50cc.

Now I've gone and typed that, I'm not so sure. Does the Galaxy fall foul of the maximum GTW rule meaning it is classed as a minibus, i.e. 1mm minimum over any 75%, and a visible pattern on the rest? Confused myself now...:(

I agree with Mirez, sounds like insufficient tyre load rating, or running under pressure. Never had any problems with the Galaxy wearing tyres unevenly.

After a bit more research, the way I read the info on the link to the MOT tester's manual below, the normal car limits apply to the Galaxy... the other stuff only applies to goods vehicles, minibuses, etc..

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_410.htm

A 1.6mm minimum tread depth applies to

A vehicle first used after 2 January 1933 that is either

a. a passenger carrying vehicle (car, motor caravan etc) with not more than 8 passenger seats, excluding the driver's, or

b. a goods vehicle or dual purpose vehicle not exceeding 3500 kg maximum gross weight

A 1.0mm minimum tread depth applies to

· A passenger-carrying vehicle with more than 8 passenger seats excluding the driver's seat

· A vehicle first used before 3 January 1933.

The other relevant bit about the remaining 25% of the tread...

Each side of the central band of the tyre can be devoid of tread (ie. 'bald') and still meet the pass.

I believe the 'visible tread' rule was relaxed relatively recently.

1. the tyres are federal, cheap ones but reinforced extra load rating (95)-----i wouldnt buy them again !!! pressures all ok, and guaranteed 4 wheel aligned 2 or 3 times each and every year.

2. i must be the most horrible mot tester on the planet as well ????

thanks for a total load of crap

 Why don't you just pop down to your local MOT test station and ask them if the tyre will pass. I'm sure the vast majority of testers will give you free advice.

Its not surprising that some questions provoke a "oh dear...." response.

Tyre wear is a very basic issue that most people should know about and there are dozens of sites with great detail on MOT requirements.
