Sightly off at tangent - any idea where I can get a TIS disk for my 2000 (mk 1) Gal? I have bought one over ebay but the Bulletins, wiring diags are OK but the workshop manual covers 2000.75 models (mk 2) only. I will buy one if I can find one!!

I would be VERY careful about discussing such subjects in a public area like this. The TIS disc is copyright and belongs to Ford Motor Company and it is not in the public domain.

While I know Ford own the copyright to the TIS CD, I can't see why they get uptight about people having it. It's not like a music CD that a company sells and they lose revenue if people copy it. They don't sell it and therefore don't lose money from it. The only arguement I could possibly see is people will do their own repairs if they have the cd but people will do that anyway.

The only people they will upset by getting aggresive about this are the very people who buy their cars.

I'm not getting upset or aggresive, just a friendly word of warning that people are exposing themselves to fines up to

Ford some reason Ford do not seem to make an issue over the TIS being in the public domain, but they do take action against those trying to trade the Microcat Fords Parts software. I bid for one on Ebay and got a strong email advising me not to bid on the item and it was then withdrawn from sale by Ebay.

Sorry John I wasn't implying you were getting upset about this, I just mean't Ford would be annoying the very customers they want to keep happy.

P.S. Am I right in assuming from your reply that you work for Ford or have I read that wrong.

Hi,

No apologies needed at all, no I don't work for Ford but I do know someone who's house was raided at 02:00 in the morning, searched and all of his computer equipment (nearly

Owning an unauthorised copyof a TIS CD, in any form, is likely to be an infringement of the copyright (presumably but not necessarily Ford's) in the disc and its contents. It's unlikely, but not impossible, that Ford will go after a car owner just for having the CD, however.

The dissemination of the TIS material for non-commercial use doesn't do Ford any harm; they don't sell legitimate copies of the CD themselves (do they?), so they are not losing sales, and it is unlikely that TIS users would otherwise be having their cars fixed commercially (not that Ford would benefit if they did, but Ford dealers might pester Ford to go after TIS users if they felt they were losing business).

If Ford sue for copyright infringement, they will need to show financial damage in order to obtain damages; fat chance of doing that with a mere non commercial owner of a pirated TIS disc. Criminal penalties are a possibility, but a remote one. There's a lot of difference between having a pirate copy of Word, which presumably lose Microsoft $M a year (my heart bleeds), and a pirate TIS disc, which presumably lose Ford approx. 0 a year.

A possible risk is that Ford might get pissed off if they think that people are profiting significantly by selling the TIS CDs. They might then hassle owners of pirated discs to find out who's supplying them.

Things may be different for commercial car repairers with pirated copies. Ford could be put under pressure by Ford dealers to go after such people. Presumably TIS discs are available to commercial car repairers by a legitimate route, or do they work from a Haynes manual like the rest of us? It is also possible that EU competition law would require Ford to make the info on TIS discs avaialble to the motor trade in general on fair terms, so maybe Ford don't care about pirated copies.

These TIS discs have been around openly for such a long time with no action by Ford (of which I am aware) that they might well find it hard to start throwing their weight around now.

I assure you it is most certainly NOT an urban legend, the person concerned lives in Gainsborough and was well known to me for many years, he purchased his replacement computer equipment from my business.

I have said all that I'm going to say on this subject, you guys continue to discuss the Tis and admit to owning one as much as you want, I don't think it's worth the risk personally, these forums are easily monitored as is eBay.

All the posting above is what you expect when a Ford dealer charges

There are criminal penalties for copyright infringement (as well as possible damages and costs awards).

Copyright, Designs and Patent Act 1988 - "Only the owner, or his exclusive licensee can bring proceedings in the courts against an infringement"

It is not a criminal offence (in the UK) despite what the music industry (and others in this thread) say....

I think as of February this year it is now considered a criminal not civil offence along with owning hardware and software allowing copying of copyrighted material.

S.107 of Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 makes many activities which infringe copyright a criminal offence, including making an infringing article for sale, and distribution (possibly including giving it away). Mere ownership of a pirate copy for non commercial purposes is probably not itself a criminal offence.

Penalty is a fine or up to 2 years in the slammer.

Sorry, Alarm Man.

So it is an offence to own a video recorder or a PC?

At the risk of being boring:

'Time delay' recording of TV programs is not copyright infringement.

It is a criminal offence to 'make an article specifically designed or adapted for making copies of a particular copyright work' or to possess such an article if you know that it will be used to make infringing copies for sale or hire or for business use. Ownership of a video recorder for private use is not an offence.

As well as criminal penalties for copyright infringement, there are civil law measures which the copyright owner can take. You may be liable for damages to the copyright owner and delivery to the copyright owner of all infringing copies and the copying means (such as a PC) that you have, as well as the copyright owner's legal costs.

This is all highly theoretical so far as having a TIS CD is concerned. It seems very unlikely that Ford will come after anyone for non commercial use of a pirate copy.

What have I started.

Sorry folks, when i asked for some files from the TIS disc I actually meant to say does anybodys aircon still work, unless of course by saying that it upsets somebody then I would like to say, has anybody got wet feet, oops that might too.

Oh, well you cant please everybody all of the time.

Public announcement, nobody on this forum knows anything or has even seen a Ford TIS disc.

The End.....

ps.thanks for all the help. :D :( :D :(

If (and this is only my humble opionion) Ford were to get so upset about illegal copies of this TIS CD flying about. Wouldn't they be shouting at Ebay to close all those auctions for the said article at

I dont think Ford have had a go at anyone for possesing or dealing in copies of their technical info on Ebay? I know VW had the tech info for the Sharan removed from a Russian web site! I was lucky enough to be able to download the official VW wireing diagrams before they were removed! saying that they are all in German and it takes me forever to find what I'm looking for :(

I think the problem is when people cut and post parts of it on the forum and advertise copies for sale that it could cause trouble for the site owners! and possible for other members if the site is shut down because of this :( there have been a couple of members removed for selling the TIS via the forum!
