Hi All,

I found this site yesterday after fitting a towbar and for the first time lowering the spare wheel.... It wound down nicely and even wound up right until it was about to clip in then it fell to the floor.

After finding the photos in the technical section (Thanks!) I have taken it apart to find that everything is intact apart from the white cog that drives the cable shaft. This cog has split completely in half!

I have read pretty much every post I could lay my eyes on about the spare wheel carrier and it looks like the usual cause of failure is the cable - mine is fine so I was wondering if anyone had a cog knocking around that I could buy, or even a broken wheel carrier that I could take to bits?

It would probably superglue back together but I don't think it would be strong enough to lift the wheel.

Car is a Galaxy 2001 (Mk2) 2.3

Thanks everyone,

Sam

Mine did the same the first time I used it. The Nylon cog was also split on mine. I also doubt that superglue would fix it.

I bought one off ebay from a MkI and treated it to a good coat of hammerite and plenty of grease before fitting. It uses the same fixing holes and just bolts on. As it's all metal it is probaly also vulnerable to cable snapping as you can probably strain it more and damage the cable. It was around

Sounds like a plan, I will give it a go!

As it happens I have stuck the cog together with glue and it appears to be really really solid......... I don't expect for a second it will hold but seeing as I have to get another carrier anyway I thought I would stick it all back together and see what happens....

I fully expect it will break!

Cheers for replies so far.

Quick update....

Believe it or not the superglue fixed it........ for about 3 minutes then the cog split again but in a different place

Sorry to revive this thread but mine has packed in. I've dismantled all the innards and am.now ready for project steel threaded bar / coach bolt.

Will keep you I informed on the progress.
