Has anyone suffered from the rust bug and needed welding? Specifically the box chassis member just in from the nearside front jacking point. It gets sprayed all the time by salt and water from the tyre. Mine is rusting, layers are flaking off and today, while trying to do a disc pad change, the jack just pushed its way up through the rust. (9 years old, 178000 miles). I guess it will need welding soon.

I haven't welded this car, but I know the area you mean, I jack there too. It's probably within 30cm of a front subframe mount, so may need welding for MOT, depending how bad it is and how particular the tester is. That said, it should be very straightforward to plate the bottom of the box section if necessary.

One of the problems with trolley jacks at that point is that the round jack cup damages the underseal, allowing corrosion to get a hold. I use a hard rubber pad between the jack and the car to minimise this.

Exactly the problem and cause :) ALLWAYS use something between the trolly jack and the chassis - an offcut of decking board is ideal.

If only dealers, independents, tyre fitters etc would do the same!

Hi.

My 02 plate Galaxy failed MOT because of corrosion on offside jacking point this year.

The nearside will need doing before next MOT.

Was easy to fix by welding plate around the box section.

Chris.
