ghr Posted July 1, 2011 Report Posted July 1, 2011 Anyone removed the receiver/dryer? Looking at the photo of the replacement part from: http://www.autoairconparts.co.uk/Car-Air-Conditioning-Receiver-Drier-for-Ford-GALAXY-1.9-Tdi-Diesel-Man/Auto-from-Apr-00-to-May-06-Part-31-1037.html they supply an allen key and a bolt with it (guessing the bolt is hexhead). Am I right in thinking that once the circlip is removed the bolt is used to unscrew the disc at the top or is it just to screw into what appears to be a threaded insert to grip the disc and get it out? Took it to KwikFit today but they asked me to leave it with them and didn't seem keen to have me hanging around to watch the operation so I made my excuses and left. Quote

The latter, the disc isn't held in by anything other then that C clip but the corrosion and general festerage will make it tight so the bolt can be used to retrieve if required. its not included in the OEM kit and when I did mine it came away freely. Thanks Mirez. I read here you had a receiver/dryer but no takers a couple of years ago. Just wondered what differences there are between the old disc and o-rings that make the new type less susceptible to leakage. Quote
Mirez Posted July 2, 2011 Report Posted July 2, 2011 Not a lot to be honest! :) The old type simply has one embedded 0 ring on the disc, the new type has two.... I must look under the cap and see if anythings looking corroded as that'll be two years at the end of this month. Quote

May be able to get workmate with lathe to spin off something if it is too badly corroded. Quote
ghr Posted July 2, 2011 Author Report Posted July 2, 2011 .......probably do all this and it'll end up being the bloody evaporator :))) Quote
ghr Posted July 3, 2011 Author Report Posted July 3, 2011 .......probably do all this and it'll end up being the bloody evaporator :))) 1st problem. Got the circlip out but the disc is so crusted I can't budge it. Found a bolt to screw into the disc but it's stuck fast. Anyone else solve this problem? Quote
Barlidge Posted July 3, 2011 Report Posted July 3, 2011 The housing will be as corroded as the cap, even you do get it out you probably wont get a decent seal with just a new cap. Your probably going to have to change the condenser/drier as a complete unit. Quote
ghr Posted July 3, 2011 Author Report Posted July 3, 2011 I think you're right. It isn't going to budge. The site I posted above both are sold separately but total Quote
ads81 Posted July 3, 2011 Report Posted July 3, 2011 I changed my receiver drier on Friday night after fitting a new low pressure fill pipe. Mine too was seized at first, my solution was to scrape as much clear as i could with a small screwdriver then i spread some pag oil round the outside to free it. I let this soak in for 10 minutes then used long nosed pliers to lever it free. Mine had the cap with 2 seals and to be honest it's in poor condition hopefully it will seal when i get the gas put into it. Quote
ads81 Posted July 3, 2011 Report Posted July 3, 2011 This looks like the right part and i wish i'd spent the little extra My link I might just buy one and try and sell the cartridge on Ebay! Quote
ghr Posted July 3, 2011 Author Report Posted July 3, 2011 This looks like the right part and i wish i'd spent the little extra My link I might just buy one and try and sell the cartridge on Ebay! Gave up trying to get the disc out. Had another try but I suspect I would only damage the seating if it isn't already beyond re-use. I've just bought the condenser and receiver dryer and will fit them as my last attempt at getting the aircon going. See what happens when I get it recharged. Nobbed by ebay/paypal so won't touch them again. Just got to get the front bumper off now. As an aside I was prodding and probing the front bumper and found out that the black strip that the front parking sensors are sat in just levers off. Gives you quick and easy access to the front sensors and the connectors. Off to VW tomorrow for a new sensor (if they are cheaper than Frauds; hope so as it's a 30 mile trip to avoid the local). Barlidge Posted July 3, 2011 Report Posted July 3, 2011 (edited) Good luck with it, I think its worth the diy approach, I recently did my condenser/drier complete unit and then found 2 more leaks in the pipework. That said I've only spent £110 on 2 refills and £75 on a condenser/drier from ebay. I'm currently trying to source new pipework. From reading the forums there are some that have run into 4 figures and still not resoved all their aircon issues and thats through dealers/specialists. After I removed my old condenser, the only way I could remove the cap was to use an angle grinder to split the housing and and prise open. Edited July 3, 2011 by Barlidge Quote

Barlidge Posted July 3, 2011 Report Posted July 3, 2011 (edited) The bumber cover has the following fixings: 4 torx/flat blade fixings on top4 torx fixings in each wheel arch fixing liner to bumper3 popper fixings from underneath at the front, from above push the little rod out then remove the fixing Surprisingly little holding it on lol After those have been removed its a good tug in a forward motion from each side, the sides have some clips, this is easier with two people but can be done with one, then disconnect the Fog lights/distance sensors. Once you have the bumper cover off the bumper bar will be apparent, three torx each side (one of different size each side) The hose connection were either an alen key or torx, but simple enough. My bolts came out easy enough but the n/s connection was tight, I just rocked it gently back and forth so as not to stress the pipe and eventually it came away ok. There is another good post on this Here Pm me and I'l give you my mobile if your not sure on anything. Remember a couple of new o rings Edited July 3, 2011 by Barlidge Quote
ghr Posted July 4, 2011 Author Report Posted July 4, 2011 Thanks, Barlidge, much appreciated. I have to update on the purchase from http:\\www.autoairconparts.co.uk. Had an email from AutoAirConParts saying that the condenser comes with the receiver dryer and that they have refunded the difference. Total cost Quote
