I have a question about my Galaxy 97 2.0 DOHC (manual):

Engine was running about 70000 miles. Recently I note some bug - when engine not running for about 8 and more hours If I will start it - sometimes oil pressure lamp will light for about 3-7 second and then light off. In such cases I hear noise from cylinder head for few seconds i.e. really oil pressure is too low.

How can I resolve this trouble (oil pump change??) or it's normally for this engine?

If engine stopped for less than 7-8 hours then I have no this bug when start it.

Sorry for terrible English.

I am in process of study yet :o

Change your oil filter.

The non-return valve in the oil filter may be leaking causing it to drain when stood a long time.

Use a good quality OEM filter (e.g. Original Ford)

seatkid,

thank you for your reply.

I have just replaced the oil with Castrol gtx 10w40 and filter with Knecht (I don't remember it's number but the seller select it from catalog specially for my engine type). Before replace I used "Mann" filter and same oil and situation was the same like and now. Is "Knecht" not good brand?

Unfortunelly I can not find Ford's filter yet. I think I need to order it and wait for 2-3 weeks.

Any more ideas?

Hi,

My TDI does a similar thing.

If the car has been standing overnight the oil light will flash twice after the engine has been started.

I put it down to the oil pressure sensors being very sensitive.

Has this problem only started since you changed to Castrol gtx 10w40 ? if so what oil were you using before? and have you tried changing back to the original oil and seeing if the problem stops?

nimrod,

I can't say when really this problem starts because I has bought this car recently.

And previous customer told he used Castrol 10w40 and have no problems.

When weather was cold all was fine and oil pressure lamp was turned off immediately after engine starts - in less than 1 second. When warm weather came I have got this problem :o

Genuine Knecht or Mann filters should be OK. (But are they genuine? - far east copies probably don't have the non return valve!)

Before you jump to drastic conclusions I would next check the oil pressure switch.

Otherwise it sounds very much as if your oil system is draining during the 8 hours. It could be the oil pressure relief valve in the engine block leaking or the oil pump itself.

It would be unusual for oil pumps to fail at 70,000 miles unless it hasn't been serviced well, maybe its really done 170,000 miles and is worn.

Has the engine had any major work done on it (or parts changed).

Due to the lower temperature the oil would be a lot thicker! and less likely to drain past the non return valve and give a better oil pressure from a cold start! it may be worth your while to try a heavier wieght oil?

++++ I'm really wondered if so known manufacturer makes filters without valve.

++++ It can cause damages of so many engines! And so loosing of respect to known car's manufacturers.

++++Where is relief valve of the engine resides? In oil pump?

++++Maybe but in my opinion condition of the engine is OK. The charge of oil is not present. The charge of petrol about 10-12 liters in each 100 kilimeters. Power of the engine looks fine.

++++ I think no.

nimrod,

I don't want to try a heavier wieght oil because I think such oil's is less qualitative. Isn't it?

Thank you guys for your advises.

I have changed my oil filter to genuine Ford filter but problem still exist. When starting engine - noise from cylinder head and light on oil pressure lamp for about 5-7 seconds.

I bought filter from general Ford's dealer in Moscow so I think it's really genuine.

Any ideas?

it can be excessive wear of the engine resulting in a low oil pressure and a longer time to build up. are you sure of the mileage? (known history)

from this point I would do a compression test, also listen carefully when accelerating, do you hear knocking (worn crank bearings)
