looops Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 Hi all. Been reading through your fine forum and would like to clarify my problem. 1997 Mk 1 2.3l petrol family workhorse, 80k miles, auto. Driving back from a lovely weekend in the West Country and suddenly lost 50% engine power. Lots of shuddering when trying to accelerate, as if the choke was left full on (on a carburetored car). Managed to get it home by manually dropping a gear or two to keep the revs high. Really struggeled up and down the Mendip Hills, barely making the steepest ones, 1st gear, 6000 rpm. Looking through the forums here I'm confused if this is a ECO pipe / MAPS problem or a clogged EGR valve / solenoid. Many thanks.Paul. Quote
seatkid Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 First check your spark plugs/leads/coilpak(s) as it sounds as if you are firing on 3 cylinders. Quote
looops Posted June 20, 2011 Author Report Posted June 20, 2011 It did feel like that, will check tonight thanks. Quote
looops Posted June 21, 2011 Author Report Posted June 21, 2011 Seems you're right on the money. No spark on cylinder #3, swapping out coils proved I have a coil with a dead HT out. Quote
looops Posted June 22, 2011 Author Report Posted June 22, 2011 Because there's two coils installed I proved the dead one was dead. I've now fitted a new one and no 3 cyl is working fine. But now #1 is not firing, no spark at all. What's the odds on the second coil dying within seconds of fitting a replacement other-one. Installing the second one later and will report. Quote
looops Posted June 23, 2011 Author Report Posted June 23, 2011 Replaced the second coil and all is well. Thanks again. Paul. Quote
