Hi All,I notice there is a thread regarding Engine Management Light being on petrol engine Galaxys , I have a 1999 1.9 TDi Ghia X , VW engine I believe, that has a flashing engine Management Light I have had the car in the garage and they have cleared the error , to do with the brake light switch , but it still keeps flashing , so they say there are no errors recorded but the light keeps on flashing , the garage say its an electrical fault somewhere ,the car drives spot on ,does not miss a beat and everthing seems to be working fine.

Anyone any thoughts on this......

Thanks.

Do the brake lights actually work though? Both bulbs failed will trigger the MIL light - if they do then its quite possible you have one or more frayed/shorted wires in the tailgate rubber.

Hi

Underneath the brake pedal is an electrial switch. It sometimes get dirty with footwell dust and sticks in the ON posistion. This tells the ECU that you are driving with the brakes permanently on.WD40 will do the trick and release the plunger on the switch. It happened to my 99 Gal tdi and solved the problem.

Hope this helps

i have this same problem, i have put a plastic cap over the brake light switch to push it in about 2 mm when the brakes are off and solved the problem.. there must be a very fine line from when the switch is on and off. another common fault..

Two designs are used, earlier models have 2 switches. You can adjust their heights independently AFAIK. Later models had a single dual switch - also height adjustable I think. The MIL light is thrown on when the switches show conflicting states - or when one or more brake lamps fail (on models without a brake lamp fail display on the dash). One switch is used for the brake lights and the other is used by the ECU for other things including cruise cancel. Edited by seatkid
