Don't suppose anyone has the electrical schematic for the aircon system on a 2.3 petrol 2001 by any chance ? i have intermittant aircon again which seems to have something to do with water ingress or to put it another way everytime it rains it stops lol... :)

Ok i,ve had this car approx five and a half years now, the aircon has worked one minute and not the next and i am still no closer to finding out why. As mentioned i have noticed that usually after it rains the bloody thing will stop (usually) but this thing has a mind of it's own. I have noticed a few times the aircon panel flashing on startup etc, twice this week but i thought this mean't lack of gas yet the amount of gas is correct and no leaks detected ? Most days it doesn't flash at all, i have replaced the recievr/drier and the compressor in the past but it made no difference even though the drier was leaking in the usualll place. When it fails the compressor just won't engage or the clutch won't kick in, yet today i sat in the car park waiting for the other half and tried it and guess what, i managed to engage and disengage the thing approx 50 times at the press of the button and the aircon was nice and cold?

Has anyone come across a duff control panel in the past or experienced any symptoms like this? :)

Just a thought, is the engine under tray fitted? Thinking that water might be forced into the engine bay and soaking an electrical connection somewhere. I know water ingress can affect the power steering, same area as the compressor, if the under tray is left off.

Get the codes read, if the panels flashing its logging a code so that will be in the memory. A number of things could stop the AC working from a faulty pressure switch to an internal control error. I can dig out a wiring diagram if you really want it but its a LOT more work to go checking wiring when its self-diagnosed.

You dont even need vagcom with the climate system, turn the ignition on then press and hold both the "Recirc" and "ECON" buttons for about 3 seconds. Any fault codes will now be displayed - use the red/hotter button (front) to cycle through them. Report back the codes and I'll tell you what they refer to :)

Thanks for your replys chaps, firstly no the engine tray isn't fitted at the moment but the fault was there when it was so not to sure this is the issue to be honest, Mirez is there a particular way to press these buttons, i have tried as you said ignition on, press and hold recirc and Econ for more than the said time but the panel simply continues to flash for approx 10 secs showing all the segments/symbols etc and then reverts to normal display so either no codes or i am doing something wrong. And i am sure i have said this before but how do you know all this stuff lol??? :)

bloody hell mirez, never seen that mentioned on here before.have to start calling you 'NORRISS';) mmm maybe im showing my age there,:)

oh and mike,PUT the tray back on,water getting in can/may effect steering as posted on here a few times.

I know Norris he was a regular on tv in my younger days ;) . Yeh i also know all about the loss of PAS due to the water on the lower pulley, pretty sure i have posted about this myself after after taking a short cut over a roundabout a few years ago, i drove 200+ miles last sunday in all the rain and felt it going off and on again, my belt squeeled for 3 days after so bought myself a new one to fit and guess what it stopped before i had chance :) i'll change it anyway.

Mirez i have a cheap Vagcom will that pick up the codes if there are any, only ever used it for my brakes and airbag ?

Annoyingly there are a number of ways depending on year. Try:

ECON & Fan Down + Temperature Colder

or

ECON and the buttons for upper, middle and lower air vents

Well I have no idea what you two are on about lol - I'll google it later and if its nasty I'll be driving down to see you Mr Gregers!

Yeah the VC lead should work on the climate system if the aboves not working. What codes you got?

Well just chucked the vagcom on the old girl and this is what keeps coming up, reset it a few times but reappears shortly after:

01596 Motor for outside/recirculated air flap(V154)

35-10 intermittant

Any ideas, location?

Hello again does anyone know if this :01596 Motor for outside/recirculated air flap(V154)

is accessible from below the dash or has the whole dash got to come out, the up/down ,hot/cold flaps all work fine but this one keeps throwing up a fault causing aircon controller to flash, anyone on here every changed or repaired it?

thanks in advance

Never had a problem with it before but I would have thought it would be accessible from behind the glovebox - it should be early on in the HVAC system and the recirc "inlet" is in the passenger footwell,
