Terry ? do you have your foot on the brake when you press the button ? Edited June 7, 2011 by Amarok Quote
terryg21 Posted June 8, 2011 Author Report Posted June 8, 2011 Yes. That was the way it used to work. but the button is stuck pressed in. The car will start in Neutral and will change to drive so it is movable BUT cannot select Reverse or Park so cannot reverse. Quote
Amarok Posted June 8, 2011 Report Posted June 8, 2011 the ratchet system is designed to stop you knocking the lever into Reverse or Park so the stops for R and Park are higher than N and D 3 2 1 if you can't push the button in you wont be able to select reverse or Park as the stop needs to come up 2mm higher. So you need to free up the button OK you need to take the selector apart to get the button to pop out again. there is a single screw under the handle, when you loosen this off the handle and cover will pop off you can then have a look. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o192/Amarokuk/gearchange.jpg Quote
terryg21 Posted June 8, 2011 Author Report Posted June 8, 2011 Hi Amarok. No screw on my shift and it is different to the pic. (lables on the left and updated -chrome etc)But some good news found that the the chrome shaft just prises down and the handle with the button comes off. That bit is similar to the part shown in your picture. It is a sealed unit and lookes like it might be a spring which is stopping the button or failing to push it out.So looks like I need to buy and replace this part. Thanks for your help - I thought the whole thimk was one unit (and probably expensive.Terry Quote
Amarok Posted June 8, 2011 Report Posted June 8, 2011 Terry, sounds like you might be on your way to fixing the problem, for future reference please would you indicate year and model of Galaxy please ? mine as you can see from the signature is a 1997 MK1 2.8 Ghia (Go to My Profile and add to your signature year, model type), there are 3 models of Galaxy so it would help us all if you can indicate year, fuel type please ?. Also a quick snapshot with a cameraphone and a picture again is useful. you can upload your photo's to www.photobucket.com its free and resonably straightforward to use Welcome to the forum Quote
