I have a 52 reg 1.9 TDI Galaxy with a problem going up hills and something blocking the normal running of the engine. I have been reading through different topics and found out that cleaning the egr valve can help. The car shows no faults on the computer and the choking of the engine only happens every now and then. Does anyone know where to find the egr valve, and how to remove it? cheers

at the back of the engine, follow the intake up from the back, left and you'll find a large metal lump with a saucer type object on it - thats the EGR. Removal is 3 bolts but they arn't easy!

Oddly enough I did this job last weekend,

Not a pretty sight! Still MPG has gone from mid 40's back to high 40's early 50's so I'm happy :(

Is the saucer type object chrome and sits at the back directly behind the rocker cover? Iv'e got two of the hex bolts out (one conveniently now in the plastic tray under the engine along with the two 10mm sockets I own.....don't tell me you need a 10mm socket to get it off, right?) but where is the third?

Ahhh, get a magnectic pickup tool because yes, the 3rd is also 10mm.

They are in a triangle arrangement; one at the front, one at the back and one underneath - the one underneath is such a PITA to get to its unreal.

The inlet pipe from the EGR system comes up from the left and feeds in under the EGR. If you remove this pipe first (allen bolts) you'll find it much easier to get to that third bolt. There are gaskets at both ends of the pipe but I've never has an issue reusing them :)

I seem to be posting on two threads. Sorry about that. A neighbour gave me a magnet and with a length of narrow plastic conduit and some heat I now have a pick tool that works a treat. Got them all. Thanks for replies. I really appreciate it. I'll tackle the tomorrow as there's 120,000 miles worth of crud in it no doubt.

Cheers
