Auto Box Won't Change Gear

Hi I am new to the site, we have a galaxy 2.3 on a 2001, with a auto gear problem, what happens is if cold it will select 1st and 2nd gear but to get into 3rd you have to rev it up to 4and half to get it to change.

If it's been driven and hot it does not like to select 1st and you have to do it manually, has any body got any ideas on what the problem could be???

You can select all the gears manually and its fine!

In 2007 it had: Transmission, T\CLnvertor, Oil & sundries and change of ecu's. @ a cost of £1603.87

PLEASE HAS ANYBODY GOT ANY IDEAS AS TO WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.

We have asked Ford how much for oil change an they quoted £160 we asked how much for a diagnostic and they have quoted us £99.00.

But we thought we would ask you good people for ideas first as this is only a tempoprary vehicle and dont want to be spending to much until our Galaxy 1.9 TDI gets back on the road awaiting EGR valve as loosing pressure:(
