makaze Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Hello. I was supplied 1 key with my 2005 Galaxy, it is a 2 button type which is working fully. I want a spare key. If I get a blank key off ebay, with no electronics in it and get it cut, would this key arm the immobiliser and alarm as well as open close doors? If I got a blank with the electronics as well, would the instructions in the FAQ work for recoding both keys. Many Thanks. Quote
seatkid Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 (edited) The spare key needs a PATS chip (for the immobiliser) which can only be reprogrammed by a dealer (£££) or a locksmith with special equipment. Some blanks (e.g. some on fleabay) may not come with PATS chips and you need to buy this separately. There is a PATS chip in every key - dont confuse this with remote locking. makaze Posted May 16, 2011 Author Report Posted May 16, 2011 OK. So with one key that's working, what is the best way to get myself another working key, other than going to the dealers? I had thought I could buy a used Galaxy key off ebay, put a new HAA in and get that cut, then reprogram the chip by the method stated in the FAQ section, is this not the case? Thanks. Quote

For a key to be able to start the car it needs a PATS chip that is programmed to the ECU. This is the immobiliser. Programming of the PATS can only be done with special equipment. Dealers have this, but also some locksmiths do. Do a search of the forums and you will find out more. Quote
sparky Paul Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 (edited) You can programme a new PATS chipped key to the car yourself, see FAQ section - No.10, but the technique only works if you already have two unique keys. The only other option is a trip to the dealers to add the second key to PATS, or specialist locksmith who can make a clone of your first key. Either option will work, however a cloned key cannot then be used as a second key to program a third in, the PATS system sees it as the same key as the original. bj2004 Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 Thats right a cloned key cant be used to program a 3rd via the car but locksmiths can programme a unique key as well its the way i went then bought a fouth key just to be safe Quote

Unless the locksmith has the equipment to access PATS on the car (Ford WDS2000), it's a trip to the dealer if you only have one working key. Quote
