Hi there

I have a 1999 Galaxy Automatic. The car starts ok but warning lights remain on on the dash and i am unable to select drive gear. According to the AA man it seems to be an electrical fault with some sort of inhibitor activated. For clarity it is the lower two of the four warning lights in a square that remain on.

Any ideas?

Julie,

the Automatic inhibit switch is a simple device to take the lever out of park you need to press the brake (this is a safety feature to prevent accidental knock of the lever while the engine is running and off she goes on her own!) the two bottom warning lights are the brake lights. On the brake pedal is a plunger type of switch i.e as you press on the brake the plunger goes further into the switch and makes contact. There could be two possible reasons why this isn't working

1. The switch has failed or become disconnected (quite easy where big feet are involved !)

2. needs to be adjusted

Try pressing the brake pedal and see if the lights go out and the pin releases if it don't you need to check the brake switch
