Hello

Recently I have been getting the modding bug on my '96 2.8 Ghia X, Previously tinted the windows, just added private plate (nice!!), 17" TSW alloys with lower profile tyres (made a big difference on handling) and lowered it by 50mm (Looks so much beter!).

Now that it looks the part, was wondering on performance mods for it and this is where I would like some advice form you guys!!

1. Brakes

Would like better stopping power!! now that I have an extra 2 inches (!!) room to play with, what discs & pads would you recommend?? Think drilled ones would look good as the new alloys show more than the old ones did, but have no idea where to start!

2. More Power!

Think mine has 176bhp as standard, where as mark 2s have 204bhp (Is that right)??? Don't want to spend too much, and everybody has different ideas (turbo, nos etc.!!!). Would like to go 250+. Has anyone done this, or would you recommend not doing it. (Need more go with the number plate I have!!)

If anyone would like to see some pics, let me know and I will try!!

Regards

1. Brakes

the only company I know of that do/did a upgrade kit specifically for the Galaxy was/is by AP racing but they were loads of money! bigger disc's and 4 pot calipers but you needed 17'' rims in order to get clearence for the calipers!

there is a guy on the Seat Cupra.net forum who has fitted cross drilled disc's on his Alhambra! standard disc's and then he got the disc's drilled by an engineering company!

2. More Power!

depends on how much your willing to spend? try

Paint it white, stick a Vauxhall Astramax badge on the back and get driven around by a seventeen year old, it's the fastest production car in the world according to Top Gear :o

Watch out for the insurance hike when modding your V6. You may find many mainstream companies will not touch it as it is considered a high risk car as standard. If you forget to tell them, you may not be covered. Quite a few of the online companies will not touch it as standard, even with a low risk full no-claims driver.

It's not just performance mods they don't like, it is anything that will make the vehicle more attactive to a thief.

True, after ringing around a bit, the sound of people putting the phone down gives you a head ache!!

Cheers for the advice guys, was fairly sure that it might be too expensive, and all your advice proved it!

Sorry to be an old moaner on this subject, but I have just got a new Galaxy with the exec pack, which means low profile tyres, 17" wheels etc.

I actually think the ride isn't as good as my last galaxy without the wheels etc.

It feels harsher over bumps and i tend to notice the noise more now on rough roads.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I going nuts in my old age.

Not sure about your last one "without the wheels" - bet the ride was a bit firm!!

Lower profile tyres ie 17inch not 16inch but same overall diameter will tend to give a harder ride, as the sidewalls are shorter and will be stronger so flex less. Some of the ride comfort in any car is due to the tyre walls flexing, so the less sidewall height, the harsher the ride. You may also find that the seat cushion material has been optimised for the 16inch wheels and that it is not "in tune" with the 17inch ones, although in practice I doubt that this will make much difference.

Also, steel wheels tend to give a better ride than alloys even for the same diameter. Don't know why, but they just do. Maybe a materials expert could comment?

yes you do get a harder ride with 17s , we find with ours that you feel every bump and also change in road surface. by the way we have a set of wheels off a mazda xedos nine on our galaxy, all that was required was a plastic adaptor for centreing the wheels on the stubs and a change of alloy wheel nuts, look loads better.(used to work at tyre dist. so got 17s to match exactly the same as 16s to give no probs with speedo.) gary
