Front Shocks (top)

98 Galaxy 2.3 ghia

 

Had a bit of a rattle n/s wheel on bumpy ground, after inspection there is some play in the top of the shocks.

Looking at the forum thats how they were designed but how much of a gap should there be between the top cup and the actual body of the car as I have a 10mm gap on both sides, is this normal or will they need replacing.

10mm is quite normal.

 

Any knocking/ratting, first thing to check is the antiroll bar droplinks - they are very prone to failure, and the tiniest bit of play in one of the joints sounds awful. Fortunately, a cheap and easy fix, but I would recommend genuine or decent quality branded factor parts... the cheap no-name ones off fleabay don't last long.

Agreed. However on mine it was actually the shock that had gone giving a rattling over bumps.

 

Bounce it up and down on each corner to see if it settles ok. Should pretty much settle straight away

Thanks for the info I will look into it, had the old gal for six years hardly put a spanner to her, great motor ( but she is thirsty lol )
