My V6 is burning about a litre of engine oil every 1000 miles which concerns me - but - the book says that 1 litre every 600 miles is acceptable. Can anyone comment?.

Also, is it critical which oli we use?

What mileage has it done?

If your engine is burning oil, rather than leaking it, you may have gummed rings or hard valve stem seals.

I would be tempted to get the compressions checked, wet and dry, to ascertain the general condition.

The VR6 is happier running light oil. It must be changed no greater than 5000 miles if you do short journeys.

Also check that the crankcase beathers are totally clear, and the PCV is operating correctly.

I run our Golf VR6 on Ford Zetec Oil (API grade SL, 5W30).

It helps keep the hydraulic tappets operating well.

It also has a good detergent action.

Look at this for more info on Oil

Thanx for your reply - much appreciated. The car is showing 60,000 miles (not verifiable!!). I just changed the oil for semi synthetic - the factors checked the book for the correct type.

Can you elaborate on the other things you suggested need checking? ( I do have the TIS disk)
