Hi guy's newbie i'm afraid .........

i bought this wagon a week ago and it's been great love it oh yea it's 1997/8 2.8 ghia v6 with 4 speed auto then yesterday at the worst junction and traffic lights i went to pull away and nothing diddly squat !! so i put hazards on and sat there reving as you do in desperation and i get to about 5500 revs and it just about starts to move then you let the revs drop to about 2600 and it starts to pull but you have to hold the throttle at that point so i managed to nurse it home in rush hour traffic (got a few angry fist gestures lol ) when i got home i selected reverse and that's fine just no forward gears also noticed that the air/con has now stopped and the heater panel and roof clock no longer light up (illumination) any idea's ?????

hi guy's

is there something i need to do to get a response ? ..... have i done it right or put the question in the right place ?

You might struggle for a reply purely because autobox faults are normally quite specialist. I've never had one so probably not the best to comment but the usual issues seem to be resolved by changing or topping up the fluid. Since you've done that already I think you need to get the autobox controller read for fault codes, it's almost certainly going to have one or more stored in it with the issues you have and it might point you to a sensor that needs changing.

You could then also use the search for the fault code and see if anyone else has had a similar problem. Good luck!

Taken from another forum:

"Your symptoms might not necessarily be down to a faulty auto box. I had weird symptoms with my car banging into gear and not changing up when it should when cruising. Like you I thought the auto box might be having difficulties. In the end the problem was due to a faulty air mass sensor (aka MAS). The sensor measures the amount of air fed to the engine and feeds that figure to the engine management system. My car is not a Ford Galaxy but it is a 1998 2.4 V6 petrol with a ZF 5 speed electronic auto box.

I think the best way forwards for you is to get your car hooked up to a diagnostics computer and then get the fault/error codes analysed that way you know exactly what's wrong and where you stand.

Good luck!"

I suggest getting it hooked up to a diagnostics machine.

This is similar to the problem i had with my autobox.

When you dropped the pan for your filter change did you notice any metal shavings or chunks in the pan and what colour was the original fluid?

1 - If the fluid was smelling burnt and a lot of metal fragments in the pan you're K1,K2 and K3 clutches will need inspected this means taken the box out and a tear down.

"1st - 3rd gear clutch (K1)"

Reverse clutch (K2)

"3rd/4th gear clutch (K3)"

Reverse gear brake (B1)

2nd/4th gear brake (B2)

2 - the valve body is also worth a check this may have leaky valve bores and or malfunctioning solenoids.

If you have good wrench time tear down the box and order a master overhaul kit for the box if needed cheaper to import the parts from USA than to order from the UK that's including the cost of parts, shipping, VAT and Duty.

If it is the valve body either get a replacement or get it upgraded

Hi something to Check is your coil pack is firing on all cylinders i guess your car got warm exposing faulty coil pack.. as a not firing on all cylinders confuses autobox and replicates the failure you describe hence you were able to nurse home .

To check pack unplug each one look for spark jump or put a spare plug on spare lead .

reverse is fine but no drive or gradual movement clutch packs slipping in forward gears

as i said this will be the forward clutches or solenoids or valve body.

any questions please drop me a line
