Overheating

My Galaxy 19TDi has suddenly developed a tendency to overheat at high speed, not idle or slow speed, but very quickly when I get on the motorway. The water level is OK and nothing obvious is a problem. Any clues?

Are you getting any white mayonaise round the oil filler area? If you are it could be signs of a blowing head gasket. Had the same problem years ago on a 3 litre Capri V6, it was fine around town, take it up to speed and it overheated.

Also check the dipstick, if it looks like it's been used to stir coffee then as HJT said you have a Head gasket leak.

Are you sure its overheating and not just a sensor problem? i.e. does water start boiling..

If you're constantly losing water then maybe Head problems or a failed pressure cap on your top up bottle.

If not then,

1. check water pump -does the heater(s) pump out lots of hot air when set to maximum - and doesn't go cold after a short while

2. check thermostat, and radiator - when it overheats , is bottom radiator hose cold? If so blocked radiator or closed thermostat.

3. Check Fans come on when overheating - but this is normally not a problem when moving at speed.

i had a overheating problem last year.. after my mech checked all the above he finally found it was the water pump. when he stripped it down he found the impeler was slipping out its own shaft ... welcome to the world of crappy volkswagen pdi mechanics!

I had a similar prob on a couple of Peugeot TD's a few years back - turns out the rad matrix was partially blocked with sediment through either neeglected coolant changes or cheap antifreeze.... Stripped the header tanks from the core and cleaned out the tubes with a fine brass welding rod.. Back together and happy as larry until I sold it 3 years later..
