My gal has just clocked 100k and the air con has not faulted. I think a lot of the partial failures are due to the re circulation flap sticking. Over last summer I got the 15 second flashing display problem; this is an indication something is amiss with the system. I traced this to the recirculation flap sticking after you close it. For some reason it sticks after a rain storm so now i just leave it open. I suppose i can imagine a rubber seal sticking if it gets damp.

If anyone suffers this flashing display try running the front fan at full speed with the ignition key on and engine stopped. You can easily hear the air flow change when the button is pressed, confirming a good or bad.

My A/C was blowing warm air after little use this winter, so I got a local mobile refrigeration specialist guy to come and take a look. He did checked system and gas was down to 5psi. So did a full pressure test with no immediately apparent leaks, he re-charged the gas and let it run for a while, now blowing icy cold air. Cost:

So am i correct in thinking my air con on my 2001 2.3 gal should be icey cold not just cool and a regass would/should be the first port of call???????? To be honest its about as cool as an open window in summer

Do an a/c check at at a specialist the machine tells him all the details about the systems condition.
A/c should feel very cold after a few minutes when set to LOw.

My Galaxy had been fine for 7.5 years and 139K miles then my aircon stopped last Wednesday, I bought a can of gas and a pressure gauge from Halfords and topped it up, it was showing no pressure!

Unfortunately, when the pump started to run again it made a nasty racket!

Took it into a specialist today who check the pressure and the gas content, it was low, and then did a vacuum test. Pased the vac test but still made lots of noise.

He re-gassed it and then I spotted a puddle of tracer, the flourescent dye that they put in all systems to make leak finding easier, under the bracket that covers the near-side radiator hose clamp.

Looks like the pipe is fractured somewhere in that area, on the high pressure side, and leaked the contents only when under pressure.

Lack of oil, it's the first thing to leak out, had ruined the pump so I now need:-

New pump + drier + minimum of new pipe or possibly a new evaporator

Anybody discovered a cheap source of these parts yet?

Cheers

I think you mean condensor (the air con radiator in front of the engine radiator) rather than evaporator from your description of the site of possible air-con gas loss

If you do mean evaporator (the cold bit of the air-con next to the cabin ventilation fan) then it's not so much the cost of the part, as the labour to get at it - they have to take the dash completely apart, along with most of the engine bay to get at it
I speak from personal experience, though luckily covered by warranty ;)

My center vent temperature was only 7 degrees so I popped in another can of gas, one with system cleaner, seal conditioner, leak sealer and oil in as well as 8oz of gas.

The result was a center vent temperature of 3.4 degrees with an outside temperature of 24 degrees in the shade. Now that's a result.....

Here is the chart, 'A' is center vent temperature after running the engine at 1500RPM with the aircon at fully cold for 10 mins. 'B' is the outside shade temperature. The clear area in the curves is where the vent temperature should be.

HELP!
I'm about to buy a galaxy (in 1 HOUR'S time!!!!!!).....i noticed that the climate control display flashed several times upon startingthe engine just as I went for a test drive......does this mean that theres a problem?

or is it standard?

It means there is a problem - may just need a re-gas (

see poll above - there is a problem but can't tell how serious - never heard of it being any other problem but air con

yeh, i know its the air con but i was wondering whether there could be something else wrong with it apart from gas or compresser....

By the way i've bought it anyway....the a/c still works REALLY WELL....
