Guest jimjams Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 After reading posts on aircon problems, I decided to poke around the fuse box near the battery. I found a blown 20amp fuse! I replaced fuse and went for a spin with aircon on, still not blowing cold after 15 min drive. Checked fuse , it had blown. Any ideas where to look next? Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 I cant find that fuse on my diagrams! maybe looking in the wrong places? but IIRC on mine it had something to do with the compressors clutch solenoid and the power to the high speed fans relay/controllers Quote
Guest T120 Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 Hi All Just clocked this link on the cylinder head thread.http://www.environcarsales.co.uk/ Only Quote
Guest JIMSTDI Posted July 2, 2004 Report Posted July 2, 2004 ive only had the panel flashing more down to fords drilling into a wire on airbag recall than the system messing up!!!!!! i find the aircon on the focus a lot colder with a lot more blower power then the galaxy Quote
Guest tonycoates Posted July 5, 2004 Report Posted July 5, 2004 Got the car back after ten very long days in the workshop. Word is the cost of installing a new air con system is Quote
Guest galaxian Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 Hi all Air con on my 98 TDI has packed up and have been advised that I have a suspected leaking evaporator. The give away was a residue in the drivers footwell. Been told that to fit new evaporator, receiver drier & expansion valve will be approx Quote
iainkirk Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 Don't forget the aircon works better the higher the outside temperature is. If it's only 18C outside (or lower as per current October-in-July weather), don't expect the inside to get to 18C or "Low" (whatever that tries to do) with much efficiency. If it's 35C outside, there is a much larger potential temperature differential and the inside temperature will drop at a faster rate. The inside of your Shalaxy will feel icy cold, despite still being probably 20C or higher, hence the "faint when the heat hits you" effect when you get out of an air conditioned car in warmer climes. Quote
MrT Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 I was having a few doubts about the power of my air con recently. Today it was in the sun for a few hours and after a few minutes of driving, the air coming in from the vents was uncomfortably cold on my hands, even though it was only 20C outside. Quote

[/quote] iainkirk Agreed! But I feel that the air is much much colder when the outside temperature rises above about 26 degrees. The effect is further noticeable when the sun is shining strong on the dashboard sun load sensor (As Mr T says). I have also noted that the air con compressor is working much more often under these conditions and my mpg is effected somewhat. Quote
gazza007 Posted August 6, 2004 Report Posted August 6, 2004 well I've had 6 month's trouble free AC after all my earlier problems, Been using the system all the time and has been great this summer. That was until yesterday afternoon!! Waiting to turn out of a road I suddenly noticed a funny smell and then was surrounded in a white cloud of smoke outside the car like I was coming through the doors in Star in their Eyes. Oh dear I thought and the vents went warm and the compressor stopped. I have contacted SEAT Customer Services again. Why are these systems so poor???????? Quote
grifjl Posted August 6, 2004 Report Posted August 6, 2004 Sahran 02 Tdi has been in since Tuesday morning to have the condensation collector plate replaced. The technician has been working on the car for three solid days and is only now putting the dashboard back together!!! Why do they make these things so complicated if teh system itself is prone to failure?? Speaking with an aircon specialist the other day he recommended extending the warranty if the whole system does not collapse before three years are up, as it is highly likely to collapse the following year!!!! corskey Posted August 8, 2004 Report Posted August 8, 2004 My aircon went about 3 times on the last galaxy that I had (new model) The lease company paid for the repairs (compressors, condensors and evaporators). Just bought a 2001 galaxy, and guess what - aircon (cindensor) knackerd, with a Quote
Guest benglx Posted August 8, 2004 Report Posted August 8, 2004 how do you know when the air-con needs re-gassing,as mine seems to work ok but it takes a lifetime to get cool, and then it does not seem to get as cold as other cars i have been in with a/c.......(i.e when it needs re-gassing does it not work at all) Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted August 8, 2004 Report Posted August 8, 2004 Take it to an aircon specialist - there is a rough-and-ready method that involves checking bubbles in a sight-glass under the bonnet, but the best way is to have it drained, vacuum-dried and re-filled using new oil for lubricating the compressor too. If yours hasn't been done yet, best to spend the money on it now. On my Renault Scenic, I had the system "serviced" as above at 5 years old when there were no signs of any problems. The aircon on my parents car hasn't been touched in about 7 years and still appears to work OK (but they are changing the car in late September anyway). Quote

johnkg Posted August 9, 2004 Report Posted August 9, 2004 My aircon packed up after 5 years at xmas 2002; paid Quote
gazza007 Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 Mine goes in Thurs, I love the car but I have been put off by AC reliability. You really need it, really missed it these last few days & with all this rain had plently of steamed-up windows. Quote
Guest Martyn Posted August 11, 2004 Report Posted August 11, 2004 Can anyone give me an idea of how much it costs for a new compressor and condenser (fitted). Just about to experience a big hole in my pocket I think?? Martyn Quote
Guest Martyn Posted August 11, 2004 Report Posted August 11, 2004 Thank you Ivor E Tower and Andrew T ! That was just the sort of news I wasn't hoping for !! Yes I am shopping around, I thought this would be the best place to start since we are the experts here !! I have been quoted Quote
gazza007 Posted August 12, 2004 Report Posted August 12, 2004 Well mine went in today. Got a call this afternoon saying that a large pipe that runs to the evaporator had split. David Cook SEAT garage said that never experienced this before and wasn't connected to all my other problems. Can't do till week Tuesday & weren't sure how long it would take.!!! I got back on to SEAT Cust Services and told them that I was broke and I expected them to meet most, if not all of the costs based off all my earlier problems. Anyway they were already looking at doing that and had asked the garage to send a special form in. We shall see Quote
Guest Martyn Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Well mine finally goes in Friday for new Compressor, Condensor, Gas and clean etc. The good news is that the small Air Conditioning company I use have now confirmed the price at Quote
