jonesal26gc Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 I have just had a Witter towbar fitted very satisfactorily (fixed) and have had no problems with the parking sensors at all. Indeed, even with the Witter towball bike rack backet fitted all is well. However, the bumper is no longer as firmly fixed as it used to be (since the 'crash bar' behind the bumper has been removed. seatkid Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 However, the bumper is no longer as firmly fixed as it used to be (since the 'crash bar' behind the bumper has been removed. Are they allowed to do that? (for safety reasons) Quote
johnb80 Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 My Towsure bar also removes the metalwork in the bumper, I assume a) the Towbar is a very suitable replacement (attached straight onto the chassis rails and thus makes the other vehicle my Galaxies rear crumple zone). The towbar also has several brackets which attach to the bumper to make it secure. Quote
Tigger Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 And if anyone hits you from behind it puts a nice wedge in the front of their car. This acts a crumple zone? I also have a fixed tow bar with not problems. In fact it helps me wash the roof it acts as a good step! Quote
johnb80 Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 And if anyone hits you from behind it puts a nice wedge in the front of their car. This acts a crumple zone? Thats it, you've got it in one ! When I had my Range Rover it had the full blown Land Rover tow-bar and a Citroen ran up the back end of it (he was way too close most of the time). I braked, he wasn't looking and he hit my Rangie. His car was 14 months old and a right off, the Rangie ? New tow ball cover needed. If the people behing think a tow bar looks threatening they can always leave more distance, if someone runs up the backend of my Galaxy thats their problem. Caio - JB Quote
Jim Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 I removed the crash bar when I fitted my Brink towbar on my Galaxy. I also removed the crash bar when I fiited a Witter towbar to my Passat. Quote
handy andy Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 I have an actual Ford tow bracket (actaully made by Westaflia) that I fitted. This also removes the bumper crash bar. But replaces it with a different crash bar that has cutouts in the mounting plates to allow the tow bracket into the chassis box section. Also the profile of the crash bar has been changed slightly to stop it fouling the tow bracket. The list price of the Ford replacement crash bar is approx Quote
jonesal26gc Posted May 14, 2004 Author Report Posted May 14, 2004 It's interesting to read about the Towsure and Ford options with their respective advangates for bumper support.I have retrieved my crash bar from the fitters and will consider over the weekend whether it can be modified to enable it to be refitted - somehow. I think I'll also drop Witter a line, as I'm sure they could have done more ........ Quote
Jim Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 I wouldn't worry about it too much. If there was a problem the towbar manufacturers would not get EC type approval. Quote
