Why don't you just get the insurance to pay for it ?

OP says he hasn't got fully comp. insurance. Out of interest, which company has

I'm with Aviva and it's a £10 excess on windscreen repairs. Not read the small print but that's what they deducted last time I had a chip done in ASDA's car park. Oddly enough I've got more chips now, is it notoriously easy to chip this windscreen?

Repairs were usually free, but I notice a few companies are now charging £10 excess - still free on mine, but OH's insurance excess is £10 for repair, but £100 for replacement. :angry2:

We've had the Galaxy now for nearly 8 years, and it doesn't seems particularly prone to windscreen damage... I've only collected a small star which happened shortly after I got the car.

I had a windscreen smashed by some drunken yobs about 5 months ago and as the Galaxy wasnt insured at the time I paid for a replacement screen out of my own pocket .

My Mk1 GhiaX heated screen cost me

My Mk1 GhiaX heated screen cost me £220 fitted .

That's good to know, the only info I've seen regarding heated screen costs is from previous posts on here...

I've also seen screens at £125+VAT including fitting, but they weren't heated.

I had mine done just last thursday after a yobbo put the screen in. I had fully comp so it was just the £75 excess.

The technition quoted me a price of £700 for a quick clear screen, a price i now know is outrageous.

If its any use i know that if the chip is bigger than a £2 coin or cracked the autoglass guys cant repair it. Please find out first before you hand over 70 odd quid.

Incedently, on how easy do thay get chips in them, yesterday on the motorway - thump - new chip in a 2 day old screen, id say yes, they are prone to chipping. Also the top section of the roof where it meets the glass i have just had to rust treat there arter the previous owner didnt bother covering the stone chips.

Any vehicle with a high windscreen rake will suffer stone chipping more easily, that's just simple physics.

My only concern with repairing the screen is that's its a big old safety screen at the end of the day, they don't repair big cracks/chips purely because the screen will have a substantially lower impact resistance as a result - a screen shattering at 70mph+ is no laughing matter so you really need to think twice before attempting a repair yourself. If replacement isn't an option why not look to get a second hand screen? They are surprisingly easy to remove from a scrapped car...

If your window screen crack is outside 'A' then no worries about next mot . Apparently you must have 40mm either side of steering wheel of visabilty without scracks stickers etc.

I would go scrapy's or just skip a saturday night out ! n'save for autothingy route ,chances are nothing will happen with your screen for now somthing to do with lots of little wires holding it together iirc
