Guest greasemonkey Posted May 9, 2004 Report Posted May 9, 2004 My wife has a 1997 petrol 2000 Galaxy. The gearchange on this was always great. Following a clutch change about a 18 months ago, moving from 1st to 2nd became crunchy (especially when cold) ... unwisely we didn't return this to the garage for investigation. The gearbox has now developed a whine when on the move in all gears ... which doesn't alter if the clutch is depressed. Has anyone got any suggestions what this could be? If terminal, could anyone suggest a reputable gearbox rebuilder/supplier of reconditioned gearboxes in the Cambrige area. Quote
Guest kev140766 Posted May 11, 2004 Report Posted May 11, 2004 Yippee !!! someone elso with a 2.0 petrol after Pages and pages of 50 mpg stories and facelifted model adventures. I believe there is a stock fault that causes the gear box to do this. A friend of mine had it in his '97 VW TDI. He was told it was a ford gearbox and a stock fault. Mine has done 75k and the 'box is ok at the momement (and the aircon stil works.) It cost Quote
djacks42 Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 There are a few of us - I have the Transit engine aswell (white-van-man power  !). No gearbox issues to report though. Quote
Guest Boggler Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Crunchiness in lower gears usually due to a dragging clutch plate, as you'd just had the clutch changed it sounds like they may have contaminated the plate. If they were that "careful" I'd also feel your whine may be down to a dry clutch thrust bearing. If you got a guarantee I certainly think about taking it back to them and asking them to rectify it. I would definitely think about getting the clutch checked out before you shell out on what might be an unnecessary and expensive gearbox rebuild. Quote
