Guest Head Gasket Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004  What is deemed to be a reasonable mileage for Gal front tyres. at just over 40K, I'm now on second set of fronts and original rears. original fronts (18K) were Contintals and i've just replaced Michelins (22K) with Dunlops. What is generally accepted as the best tyres for the Gal and running pressures. Load weight variations in my case, vary a lot during a working week. Quote
HJT Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Pick my Galaxy up at 18110 miles and insisted the dealer put on a new set of fronts as they were only just above the limit (maybe 1000 miles left). I'm at 30000 now and they are still going fine (about half their life I reckon). So I reckon yours sounds about right for a Galaxy. Howard Quote
Topbloke Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 i have got 22k on my front's and they need changeing but the back's are like new thought about changeing front to rear but don;t think i could afford to change all at the same time so i need a cheap replacement any idea's where i can get some been quoted Quote
Guest stawarz Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Just changed the fronts for another set of Dunlop 2020s. Nearly 22k miles on that set and they were down to ~ 2mm (changed because a builders van in front was dropping stuff that damaged one tyre). Other people I know who own ShAlAxies appear to be happy with the Dunlops. Just my tuppence worth.... AndrewIf it 'aint broke, it's probably overdue for an upgrade! Quote
iainkirk Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 18-20000 miles seems to be fairly typical on Dunlop 2020s on the front. My 53 Reg has 28000 miles on now (eeeeeeeek!) and I'm half way through the second pair on the front. The back ones look like they'll last for at least another 28000 miles! Quote
MrT Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 There seems to be some heavy tyre wear here. I am on nearly 24,000, the front tyres are half worn and the backs are hardly worn at all. I don't drive with a light foot. I have the original Michelins and they make a terrible amount of road noise. Quote
johnb80 Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 My Gal has michellins on and I'm not happy with the road noise, what are your opinions for the quietest tyre ? Regards - JB Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 ISTR that noise was raised before (no pun intended) and that Dunlops were the quietest, Michelins the longest-lasting. All the Gals I looked at buying had 2020's on them as original equipment, and they seem to last about 20k on the front before needing changing. This depends on the type of driving - I suspect that many motorway miles will not wear them as fast as town driving - speaking from experience of previous cars where this has held true. Similarly, the comparatively lightly loaded rear tyres should last for at least twice this mileage. Don't forget that the Gal is a heavy car with a large nose weight on those front tyres! Try not to turn the steering wheel when stationary or at very low speeds! Quote
Another?Maybe! Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 I changed my front 2020s at 14,000 as not much tread left, was last Autumn and thought best to have full treads through the winter. Rears show no wear as yet, now on 19,000.In my experience it pays to shop around. My usual tyre place quoted Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 If you only got 14,000 from your fronts, may I suggest that you check their inflation pressure? Quote
pj_andrew Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Got 15,000 from the fronts (Dunlop 2020s). They weren't down to the minimum tread but were low enough for me to be concerned and get some new ones. I check pressures etc every week, so must be down to how I drive ! Rears are still virtually full tread depth at 28K (Got 2xDunlop 2020s for Quote
Guest rusty Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Hi All, Interested to know what pressures people run at. The difference in the owners handbook between a loaded and half loaded car is quite a lot. What is a happy medium for varyig types of driving and varying loads? TIA Russell Quote
MrT Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 With the Galaxy front tyres having about half the life of the rear, wouldn't it be a good idea to roate tyres around the car as used to be done in standard car servicing some 20+ years ago? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 This is not recommended - the tyre wears according to the wheel camber too, and the best advice from the "experts" is to leave them in the same position. Also, if you do rotate them, you end up with a very large bill to replace all 4 at once  Quote
seatkid Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 This is not recommended Mainly because the two times I asked the dealer to do this, (different dealers - different cars) my cars both came back with bent sills.  bast*rds bast*rds   The second dealer denied damaging and told me I must have driven over a brick! Thats when I decided never to use a Seat dealer again for regular servicing. Actually my manual says "it is advisable" to change tyres back to front (i.e. not diagonal) but... "With certain types of tread wear it can be an advantage to change the wheels diagonally. SEAT dealers have the necessary information" I bet they do  My mate who been in the tyre trade xxxyears also recommends using the spare when you change, as tyres apparently have a shelf life of 3 years - and you can stick that still "just legal" one back as the spare saving Quote
buford_t_justice Posted May 1, 2005 Report Posted May 1, 2005 Just reached 20,000 miles and the original fit Dunlop SP2020's have now reached the end. ;) Replace them yesterday with Continentals so hoping for some extra mileage out of these. I was thinking of going with GSMGuy's recommendation for Michelins but although a great tyre I have found these to be a harder and noisier ride in the past (on previous cars) The back 2 Dunlop's still look brand new. Easily good for another 20,000. Quote
iainkirk Posted May 1, 2005 Report Posted May 1, 2005 I get 18-20k out of fronts and the backs will probably do 60k, although I can't be sure as they end up on the front every 15k, swappedwith the (nearly) baldies from the front! I've only used SP2020's to date and these can be had for as low as Quote
