EalingBob Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 I have a Ford Galaxy 2003 (Mk 2)TDI (115BHP.) There seems to be an intermittent fault somewhere that when idling, increases the idle speed by about 10% (say from 750RPM to 850RPM)for a few seconds which then repeats about 6-7 seconds later. It does this ad infinutum but sometimes occasionally the variation stops but starts again a few minutes later. Does anyone know what it is and what I need to do to fix it? Quote
adie_morris Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) I have had same problem for months. Totally baffled everyone! not least me, really ANNOYING! Also find mine is made worse when a high electrical load is switched on ( very prominent in current cold conditions).Well, finally I may have discovered the problem! I have disconnected the EGR valve (removed vacuum pipe & blocked off) now idles sweet as nut! I suspect the fault is in the solenoid that controls the EGR valve, as it seems to be permenantly sucking. I am sure it shouldn't do that at idle as the valve should only open during load and increased engine speed. I notice the solenoid is available aftermarket, so they obviously do fail. :-) But seeing where it is located........... not doing it in this weather! Hope this helps. Dave-G Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 The Pd engine has a known issue with the injector wiring loom, located inside the rocker cover, having poor connections. I had the issue a few years ago, it also occurred at higher RPM's if I raised the engine revs a tad. It costs nothing to remove the cover (whilst swearing at one of the hard to reach bolts on the right hand rear of the engine until you discover you had a small 1/4" universal joint type socket set knuckle hidden under all the other tools, hint get one before you start the job) and check/tighten each connection. I'm suffering "hunting" at tickover with a small blip/fall in revs and then back to normal, when it happens Quote

pauls ghia Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 I had a similar problem on my Galaxy - uneven idling and higher than normal rpm after starting up. Cured it accidentally by changing the water temperature sensor. It had been flagged up as faulty by VAG-COM. Maybe worth a look. Check FAQ 56. Paul. Quote
