Hi all. (1999 2.3 auto). Problem just started a few days ago. Will pull away and shift upto second gear but then revs get too high and won't shift to 3rd gear. I changed the gearbox oil as soon as I bought it a few months ago so that shouldn't be an issue.

Anyone have any ideas where I should start looking?

Thanks.

Sounds like low fluid to me.. I recently had much the same problem drained flushed and topped up gearbox oil and all is well again so far at least

Another thing to do is remove the gearknob and the plastic surround to reveal the well that the wiring and shaft go down into, I'm sure, like me, you will find about a litre of water in there soaking the gearbox wiring nicely

Good luck with it folks

Hi all, what's the term for someone who isn't even a noob? That's me! Anyway, i have much the same problem with my mk2 2.3 auto - it won't shift into 3rd. There's no awful knocking, thumping or struggling to get into 1,2 or R as these work fine. I'm ashamed to say the "deal" i thought i was getting at auction wasn't so... :-(

So, there appears to be an oil leak - not sure where this is coming from but it the undershield is stained directly below the box. I disconnected the valve control connector expecting the box to go into limp mode... it didn't. It sticks in 1st! Not sure if that definitely rules out the ecu as the manual tiptronic side doesn't appear to work (console indicates it's in 2nd all the time and doesn't shift up or down). My universal reader tells me there's a pending 0700 fault - from what i've read this only tells me there could be a problem but doesn't tell me anything more (?!?).

Any advice greatfully received (apart from get rid of asap!)

First things first, you need to get yourself a VAG-COM interface cable and software to read any codes from the gearbox, or find a friend with one.

You also need to ensure that the fluid level in the gearbox is correct, this is critical and can cause all sorts of problems... and preferably fix the leak. You will need the VAG-COM to do the fluid level correctly.
