What do you mean by knocking? Where is it coming from, and when does it happen (under braking or all the time, for instance)?

Sounds like the ABS is misbehaving, as you obviously realise; the correct operation of ABS sounds and feels quite dramatic, and it may be that yours is operating before the wheels lock. There have been problems with sensors malfunctioning; search for the threads. Dirt seemed to be a problem IIRC. One would expect your garage to have found this fault (if that's what it is), but it seems that your average Ford spanner monkey can't find his arse with both hands (other than any who contribute to this forum, obviously).

Try an independent auto electrician who specialises in ABS.

HotScot,

Remember if your car has ABS you need it working for MOT.

There may be insurance implications also.

I had thought that the easy solution was just to disconnect the ABS if it had packed in, but the MOT people here in N.Ireland told me that if ABS is standard it MUST work.

MOT tests in NI are government run, so it's not just a matter of mechanics trying to squeeze money out of you.

...and if you have ABS and it is not working, whatever the reason, the Police can issue you with a ticket for a serious fine for having a defective braking system. If you have ABS, it MUST be working.
