Had another bash at the speedo issue but without success.

Have checked all the fuses and they are all good, I don't have any other electrical faults with the car, everything works just fine.

There's me thinking I was the only one with this speedo issue...

Still following the grounding issue, using ELSAWIN I decided to check the speedo connectors green and blue, stripped the speedo clocks down to the circuit board, all grounding points seem to make good continuity from the relevant connector pins accross the board.

Blue Connector Earth Pins Female connector on dash

7 - Terminal 31, sender earth

9 - Terminal 31, earth

24 - Terminal 31, earth

Pins 9 and 24 give good ground to chassis, pin 7 give no connectivity, I stripped the connector further and there is no wire there so perhaps it is a blank/spare.

The manual suggests that pin 3 on the blue connector is the Output signal from electronic speedometer, can I test this with a multimeter or can this only be done with a scope?

I checked for resistance on the blue connector but not knowing what readings to expect I got varied resistance values on a number or different pins, not sure if this is normal.

Zorgman, if you could put up a picture of the ground wire on the multi-connector you mentioned earlier, it may just be the culprit. I could always drive down to your home town for a VAG diagnostic test...hint hint

Thank you all for helping out and sticking with it.

Hi, same problem on 1 of our taxis... Turned out to be the speedo drive sensor, water-logged after a recent headgasket/coolant fault.

Yeah, I was beginning to think I should replace the sensor on the gearbox BUT since yesterday and today, it is kinda working in such that the speedo needle goes from 0 -20 then back again then up to 60 and back again, even moved a little when the car is not moving....strange.

So what could cause that does anyone know, speedo, sensor or still a bad connection/earth.

Hi

No not tried another clock set as yet, I was told that it contains the immobiliser within it therefore would need recoding with a pin by VW.

I have removed and checked the sensor in the past and it seemed dry and the heat glue intact.

I have a 2001 1.9tdi Seat Alhambra.

I too have exactly the same problem. My Fuel Gauge drops when the car is going round corners and when im breaking, Feels like the sensor is bobbing about on top of the fuel as it moves about in the tank. And ofcourse it beeps when it detects low fuel. Its really REALLY getting on my wick now!!

The speedo is dead too. I have occasionally had the speedo working (for short periods) and when it does, the fuel gauge is normal.

There has been no significant work done on the car in the weeks leading up to this problem, nor anyother problems. I did have the gearbox rebuilt and the coolent system fixed (the gearbox oil was mixing with the coolent) but this was 12months ago.

If anyone has any infomation or fixes that can be checked (on a low budget) it would be great!

Ok Chaps, now it's my turn. I have exactly the same symptoms as Tona955 and Carlc. Started with dancing speedo and fuel gauge, often fuel light beeps when going round corners/ braking. Now most of the time the fuel gauge reads correctly even though the speedo is dead, so there is not a direct correlation between these 2. Occasionally the speedo will burst into life and read correctly for a few miles. Tacho and everything else is fine.

I too have had the head off etc, and generally done a lot of work around the engine bay. The speed sensor (VSS) connects through C111 which is directly below the coolant tank, so I thought that water might have got in there....cleaned it up but no joy. I have buzzed out the Blue Connector on the dash pins 9 and 24 and they both give good connection to chassis. I have checked the earth connections within the Instrument cluster and they look fine also. I can't believe it is a faulty instrument panel, has all the feel of a dodgy earth. Yet from TIS the speedo and fuel gauge do not seem to share much circuitry/ earths.

Anyone got any ideas please?

Tona955, Carlc did you solve this problem?

Also, how exactly does one get to the gearbox speed sensor. I've had a look from on top: removed the diesel filer and coolant tank but still can't even see it..where is it?

Thanks
