John Helyar Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Hi there i have a W reg (2000) Mk2 face lift Galaxy 2.3 DOHC and my Aux Belt Tensioner had some what melted and fell apart now i have picked up a new one and gone to fit fairly simple to take old one of and new one on but i am having major issues with getting the belt on. I have followed a Diamgram on there how to route the belt back on but i cant get enought slack to get the belt on can some one please help me out and explain how to get enough slack on the belt to refit it please as i have spent a few hrs trying to figure it out and i cant seem to get it right. Cheers Quote
Mirez Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Which diagram are you following? IIRC the official TIS one is actually wrong! Quote
John Helyar Posted November 23, 2010 Author Report Posted November 23, 2010 i used this one which i found on here. http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/uploads/monthly_06_2007/post-3488-1181050991.jpeg i hope this is correct otherwise i have wasted alot of time trying. Quote
Mirez Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010
I *think* thats the official version (which is wrong!) I believe the 2nd pulley up on the right, instead of coming back inside that one it should just follow the route around the outside.
Quote
John Helyar Posted November 23, 2010 Author Report Posted November 23, 2010 I will check it in the daylight i did have it a different way to start with but the belt was very lose but i will double check when i can see as its rather dark now if i still have a problem i will reply back 2moro cheers for your help Quote
phil1 Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Are you moving the tensioner pulley towards the engine block, coz if you don't it will never go on. Quote
John Helyar Posted November 23, 2010 Author Report Posted November 23, 2010 might sound stupid but only way i cud get the tensioner to move was to undo it and then pull it out a bit and twist it and it still wudnt go on i cudnt move it while it was screwed in fully or am i still doing soemthing wrong Quote
phil1 Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Using a spanner on the tensioner centre bolt turn the tensioner towards the engine block (pull it towards the back of the car) it aint easy but it should move on its spring mechanism. You then have to hold it whilst you put the belt on. Quote
John Helyar Posted November 23, 2010 Author Report Posted November 23, 2010 great i will give that a try 2moro then cheers for the advice Quote
phil1 Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 Give it a go. I have a late Mk1 (1999) 2.3 DOHC and the diagram you have matches my car layout. The tensioner pulley being the small pulley, third from the bottom, just to the right and above the large crank pulley. When you put the belt back on make sure that it is seated correctly on all of the pulley grooves, then release the tensioner (you don't want to ruin your belt). Quote
John Helyar Posted November 24, 2010 Author Report Posted November 24, 2010 Sweet that worked i was putting the belt on right so that part was ok but the belt was still a pig to get on but all sorted now. Quote
sparky Paul Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 (edited) As Mirez says, the TIS diagram above is certainly wrong for the early 2.3. Not 100% sure about the mk.2, but I wouldn't have thought it would have changed. In the diagram, the belt is the wrong side of the PS pump and the idler pulley. The belt will fit as above, but power steering will give trouble and running the wrong side of the pulleys will damage the belt. You can work out where the belt goes, easily enough. Just put the inside of the belt around any pulley with grooves, and the outside of the belt around any smooth pulleys. Edited November 24, 2010 by sparky Paul Quote
