peterh Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 I have a 2008 Ford Galaxy and I have a problem where the steering goes very stiff (as if the power steering isn't working) intermittently particularly when making a right turn. The power steering hasn't stopped altogether. There is fluid in the reservoir and no visible sign of leaks. Is it as a faulty sensor of some sort? I need to fix this ASAP as it can be potentially dangerous. Can anyone help? Quote
Phil Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 Hi Peter, I have just stopped mine from doing this, it is also more noticable wet damp or wet.You need to replace the power steering belt, it may just need tightening but i found this has just delayed the inevitable. HTHPhil Quote
mikej Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 (edited) I take it you people have the large undertray in place as not refitting it is NOT recommended, i almost totalled my Gal and myself some years ago because of not refitting it, basically when raining or wet the water can splash over the lower pulley causing tempory loss of PAS, basically it causing the belt lose grip on the pully and no matter how hard you try you will go in the direction your pointing trust me going over a roundabout and not around it isn't funny. :) pretty sure it's been mentioned a good few times on here though.Oops sorry just noticed you have the later model Gal so not sure if this is the case on this model Edited November 17, 2010 by mikej Quote
Phil Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 oh yer forgot to mention that one mikej, also another one it to make sure the towing hitch cover is fitted as water has a direct path through that and onto the belt. Phil Quote
sparky Paul Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 I'm not sure towing hitch cover causes the same problems in the mark III model, and I'm not sure that a worn belt would be likely after only two years. It's certainly not impossible, but I would be looking for the cause if I found a belt worn out after such a short time. Is the car not covered by the 3 year Ford warranty? You might get more specific help for your problem in the mk.III section rather than here, where mostly mkI/II owners loiter... the 2006-on mk.III cars are very different to the earlier VW-derived mk.I/II models. sparky Paul Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 (edited) I've just had a quick glance in the mk.III section, and there's a thread from someone else with an issue similar to yours. http://www.fordgalax...showtopic=21376 It might be worth a search to see if there are any other similar threads. Hope this helps! :) Edited November 18, 2010 by sparky Paul Quote
peterh Posted December 22, 2010 Author Report Posted December 22, 2010 Guys, Thanks for all your comments. To cut a long story short, the whole steering rack was replaced and it's fine now. Thankfully, just for once, it was a warranty item and therefore didn't cost me anything other than time as it took over a week to get the part and the garage had stripped it all down to diagnose the problem so I had to leave it in the garage for 8 days. Still a result nonetheless. Now the horn doesn't work, well actually it wasn't for a few days, called the garage and they said bring it in, then it started working again. Now it's not working again. Could it be the temperature? This is a serious question. Has anyone else experienced the horn ceasing the be operative when the weather is freezing? It may of course be a faulty connection.
