Help, Can anyone describe how to remove the plastic scuttle cover that sits at the botton of the windscreen, Having accidently cracked a focus windscreen removing that one, I don't want to repeat it on the GAL. Obviously the wiper arms need removing but how is the cover fixed and what tools are required to remove it

2005 ghia 130tdi

Thanks

Why do you want to? Unless you are planning to remove the wiper linkage there isn't much to be gained from removing it - the scuttle itself is 3 bolts and it slides out leaving the plastic grills behind.

Hi Mirez,

Need to get to the Aux coolant pump as very quiet under there, and aux heater is shutting down due to overheat, so need to change the pump

Ahh ok, then no you don't :)

There is nothing more to be gained by removing the cover. With the bonnet open you'll see a rubber seal between the cover and the extension panel - pull that off. You may also have a small foam cushion on either end of the rubber seal which should also be removed. Next, you'll find one bolt in the center from the engine side which needs to removed and another two at each end, next to the bonnet hinges and these are acessed from the other side.

Once the three bolts are out then the extension panel pulls out forward. I normally remove the airbox (one allen bolt) which makes it easier to slide it out away from the coolent bottle. You should then be able to change the pump :) Good luck!!

Thanks Mirez, that has really helped put my mind at rest, probably be able to get to the brake fluid better in future aswell!, Just got to sort the pump now, hopefully be able to replace the brushes, rather than the whole pump, but only done 40k so surprised it has failed. Thanks again for your advice, wink

Hi Wink,

There is a write up in the FAQ section I think. Although it mentions it is for a mark 1, I found it useful. A good tug on the drivers side and then it should slide out fairly easily I sem to remember.

Hope this helps.

PS.

I would also be curious to know if you find a piece of foam in a plastic bag marked up with a VW part number in the scuttle drain (behind the wiper motor I think). I have no idea what this is for, but several other people on a German forum have also found it???

Hi Kev,

Removed false bulkhead yesterday was a bit tight in and out on drivers side, may have been easier to remove the upper scuttle, do you know what holds that in place. Didn't find any plastic bags, maybe someone beat me to it, what would have been in it?
