kertrats24 Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 Hi i go my 02 2.9tdi 90pd a week ago and have noticed when going up hill quite steep/long the temp gage when very high not into the red but close but then fell back to 90c when i was back on the level.I know she needs a good service (doing this weekend) just looking for the overheating problem i suspect the stat. but not sure.thankskertrats Quote
Mirez Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 Water pump impellor adrift would be the more likely cause - ie replace the water pump! Quote
kertrats24 Posted October 28, 2010 Author Report Posted October 28, 2010 hi thanks for the reply is there any way of checking without removing the water pump am i write in thinking its powered by the cambelt. Quote
Mirez Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 Not really, the TDI is so efficient that pump issues only really surface during long idle periods or heavy workouts. Given the symptoms its the most likely culprit at this stage. You are correct that its timing belt driven, probably worth getting it changed at the same time. Quote
Areyoulookingatme Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 (edited) Hi, if you take out the stat & push your finger right in to the left you can actually feel the impella of the water pump. try to turn this with your fingers, if it turns, your water pump needs replacing. MAKE SURE KEYS ARE NOT IN IGNITION , BETTER STILL DISCONECT THE BATTERY. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. Edited October 29, 2010 by Areyoulookingatme Quote

Areyoulookingatme Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Hi, your right stat is there & it is abit fiddely, but if you use a short length spanner you can get the bottom bolt ok. If you do tackle it when you get the stat out put it in a pen of hot water & bring it to boil on the cooker, it should start to open before the water reaches boiling point,IF IT DOESNT OPEN FULLY CHANGE it ,test the new one in the same way, as i have had a faulty new stat before. Lets know how you get on. Quote

Areyoulookingatme Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Hi, i would definitely check the stat first, could be jammed shut.Or have you tried swapping the expansion tank cap,if the system isn't pressurising this would cause over heating. Have you any other symptoms, do you lose any water. when the over heating occurs, can you hear the electric fans coming in to cool the radiator. As for you timing belt & water pump price, make sure he puts a timing belt kit on, this includes the belt & the pulleys etc(cost approx Quote
kertrats24 Posted November 3, 2010 Author Report Posted November 3, 2010 Hi i was goning to get the cambelt done any way as i have just bought the car with 150000 on the clock and no record of when it was done and yes they are replacing the hole lot .I will look at doing the expantion bottle cap as when the temp when right up i did loose some water not much from the tank i thoght that would be normal as it was over presureised.I have checked rad pipes when the car is running and top and bottom pipes are hot i also checked the small pipe that runs to the top of the expantion tank it is clear(you can blow through when removed) but there is no flow of water when the engine is running i was advised that if the pump is working there should be a steady flow of water.saying all that i took it for a run yesturday got it up to temp 90c and drove up a couple of local hills and the temp only went to one mark over 90C..??? The only other thing is when i plugged it into vag-com i had 4 flame out codes from rear heater could this be related. kertrats24 Posted November 4, 2010 Author Report Posted November 4, 2010 Hello well the garage phoned yes the water pump is faulty like we thought yay (ish) they also said the camshaft pulley was crumbling so needed replacing does that happen.../is it known to.. just sounds odd.any way i should have her back tomorrow and i will be Quote
Mirez Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 The pulleys are all plastic which is why they should be renewed as a set when the cambelt is changed - sounds likes Quote
kertrats24 Posted November 6, 2010 Author Report Posted November 6, 2010 well got it back today and gave it a good run no over heating at all my bloke at the garage showed me the pump the impella was still attached but it could move out 10mm and then it would spin free the cam pully was a f%$ Quote
