Mkll Exhaust Pipe

Took my 2006 Mkll in for service this week, and when it was on ramp got a call to say that the Exhaust Back Box was "hanging off"

 

Went and had a look and it was! It was being held on by the two rubber mounts

 

Strange thing was there was no blowing sound from the exhaust so dont know how long it had been like this???

 

When they removed back box, the middle section where it meets the back box was also corroded, which meant that i had to have this replaced too.

 

The car is 2006 with 86,000 miles on it

 

Just wondering if this is normal in terms of the exhaust sections wearing out / rusting??

 

Anyone still got an original exhaust system on a 10 year old Gal?

Hmmm... sounds about right. The back box on my MK2 did exactly the same it was totally rotten yet I hadn't noticed any change in noise. I changed it at 110K miles.

 

On my wife's Mk1 I had to change the cat a couple of months ago after it developed a crack and broke. Not bad though as it had done 148k and is the only part of the exhaust that has required replacing since I bought the car new in 1997!!! - now that's value for money.

Got a 2001 2.3 petrol with original inc cat although now i have said it it will fall apart any minute :)

My exhaust is I believe, the original dating from 2000. I think its some way past its sell by date. Its not blowing but had to have a bracket welded back on 2 years ago. Last time I dared look it was looking a little ahem, exhausted. :)

The exact same thing happened to mine about 6 months ago (6 years old and 60K miles). New centre & rear box (corroded at the join, not any noticable noise difference, they found it on the MOT) cost about

My 2001 Mk2 failed MOT due same problem,blowing through crack at the joint between second and back box,put on on of patch kits but would like to fit a more secure sleeves you can get from the net for about

mine went about 2 years ago (2000 x--138k);

 

i found a piece of straight pipe with smaller diameter, shoved it in the back box where it had sheared off and migged it. last year the centre pipe broke at same joint!!! so larger diameter pipe was sleeved over/to repair so that the repaired back box fitted as it should.................
