Hi,

I am new to the forum and in the process of buying my first Ford Galaxy. The cruise control on a car I like is not working and I was wondering if anybody could help. The car is a 2003 1.9 TDI 115. The cruise seems to be built into the steering wheel. When you press the buttons their is no relay sound and no light comes on. Is the one fitted to this model still a vacuum type or did ford change it? Any idea on costs of new ones/repairs. The seller is trying to solve before I buy it but they don't seem to know much. Thanks for any help.

The cruise control is on the indicator stalk - a button on the end and a switch on the stalk itself.

On diesels the cruise control is electronic via the ECU. No vacuum or relay involved. CC only works in 3rd gear and above. Common reasons for it not working are a faulty brake switch (this is a dual device so brake lights working doesn't necessarily mean its working fully) or faulty clutch switch - pressing either pedal will disengage the CC automatically. Not all models have a CC light. CC cannot be activated until you are moving above a minimum speed in 3rd gear or above. The brake switch must have been activated (i.e. brakes applied) at least once after the car is started before CC is allowed.

Thanks for the reply,

This is a Ghia model so assume it has cruise control but there is nothing on the indicator stalk. The buttons are on the right hand side of the steering wheel. They are marked On - Off- Set- Can. If they are not cruise, any idea what they are for.

That'll be cruise, its not on the stalk if you have a multifunction wheel (any buttons other then the horn on the galaxy). To set you need to press on, then set. On an 03 you should get the light on in the cluster when you press on - seatkids advise about the switches is spot on but not quite sure where the 3rd gear info comes from :) CC will work in ANY gear providing the speed is 25mph or greater.

Thanks again,

When test driving I noticed that nothing happened at all when on was pressed, no light came on. Does this still point to the switches or could something be wrong with the steering wheel controls?

Potentially it could be, it would be more likely the clockspring wiring rather the button itself though.
